Safari and Firefox "Not Responding"

I'm suddenly having trouble with both Safari and Firefox not responding. There's no consistency to it, other than it doesn't take long. At first, it was with selected web sites, but now it's general. I've run MacJanitor and emptied the cache. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

I am having the exact same problem. Started yesterday at 2:30 pm (3/7/08). Both macs will not finish loading a web page without going into "not responding" and I have to do a force quit. The only exception seems to be apple.com

Weird. Any ideas? I've reset my Airport Express...restarted everything many times

You can add me to the list of people having this problem too. It seems to me like it's happening on pages that are trying to load Flash content. Again, like with the OP, it's happening in both Safari and Firefox. A few sites I go to regularly that cause the lockups are:

ign.com
espn.com
detroit.tigers.mlb.com

The problem is not limited to these sites, but they seem to be the ones that I am having most of my issues with.

Just curious, has anyone here had any OTHER problems with Firefox?? 'Cause I recently upgraded to Tiger, and Firefox has/had been my browser of choice before (I like how it more closely emulates Explorer's organizational model, one particular example being how it adds bookmarks from oldest TO newest, NOT the other way around). However, my computer's been freezing a lot more so recently, and usually when I'm using Firefox, so I haven't ruled that out as a variable. I'm even using Safari now to write this.

Anyway, if you've HAD any similar problems with it, or have any suggestions of any other browsers that resemble it (I've been hearing about this Comina, and Opera, but don't know if any of them are any good, or can import bookmarks), I'm all ears. Thanks.

To answer your question, I have not had any other problems with Firefox besides this issue. And I also haven't had any other system lockups, it's just the browsers that are locking up. Also, since you mentioned Camino, I went ahead and installed it, and it's doing the same thing as Safari and Firefox.

This is killing me right now. I can barely even use the internet, and that's really about all I do with my iBook.

The problem seems to have gone away. Unfortunately, I can't tell you what I did in a systematic way. I ran MacJanitor, emptied the cache, and rebooted. The problem is that I emptied the cache and rebooted a number of times before it took. Running MacJanitor wasn't enough in itself, because I used the browsers right after and still had the problem. The answer appears to lie in emptying the cache. The worrisome thing is that I don't think the cache actually emptied the first couple of times I tried. Shades of Millenium...

If your Safari keeps crashing, or if you are updating Safari (or just have):

Input Managers and other plug-ins from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed 10.4.11 and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level Library), log out and log back in, and try again.

So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 uses Safari 3.0.4 which is not a beta. If Safari 3.0.4 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!

(Trying to revert to Safari 2 when running 10.4.11 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.0.4 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail, Dashboard widgets etc also rely.)

Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Add-on that have been frequently mentioned here, among others, for causing such problems are Piclens, Saft, AcidSearch and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them and go the developer's sites to see if new versions are available for Safari 3.0.4.

You should also ensure, if you are running Tiger 10.4.11, that you have downloaded and installed the correct version for your Mac of Security Update 2008-001.

As Leopard also uses Safari 3.0.4, much of the above may well also apply to Leopard, but is not guaranteed. Moreover:

Some users have mentioned that the latest Flash Player (v.9.0.115.0) conflicts with Safari in Leopard, and that they have needed to revert to v. 9.0.47. This can be downloaded from here:
