Tamara is correct.

It could possibly be that the Network Towers in the areas are busy with lots of data traffic and have a delay. But a couple things I would like you to try out.

1. See if the Delay occurs in other areas then at home, Like at work, around town, other cities etc.

2. Reboot the iPhone and see if the delay continues, Hold down the Home button & Sleep/Lock button together, Let go once you see the silver Apple Logo. iPhone OS will reboot.

3. Toggle Airplane Mode on for 1 min, Settings-Airplane Mode ON for 1 min then Turn OFF, Now test SMS

4. Reset Network Settings - Be advised if you setup VPN, and or programmed WiFi passwords, These will be reset and need to be set back up when the time comes for that. Settings- General - Reset- Reset Network Settings - Confirm - iPhone will reboot - Retest SMS

Removing SIM card

5. If needed Eject SIM card from iPhone clean it with a soft cloth that is dry, Blow gently into the SIM card slot of the iPhone to blow out any small particles, Now put SIM card back into tray and back into iPhone, Test SMS

6. Contact AT&T for further assistance with this issue. Refer to department that assists with EDGE Data

Once you have taken the above steps kindly provided by Andrew T and the problem still persists I would contact your network provider AT&T because they will be able to see when your sent messages were recieved or not as the case may be.

They also should be able to see to opposite, for your delayed recieved messages.

They should be able to re-set your handset by 'pinging' it this will refresh its network status - I would also ask for a credit to your airtime account for the inconvenience caused and also the lost text messages

Do not accept any excuses that they may give you for instance, poor signal strength, because if you live and work in a built up area which AT&T state you would experience good signal strength then they would contradicting themselves.

This can still be account based as well. Sure your sending out. But the data package works both ways. It could be an issue with the receiving.

And yes it could still be the iPhone as well and you certainly want to keep that in mind.

Try what I posted earlier. If it does not help. You can restore your iPhone, If same issue occurs you can look into 2 other options.

1. SIM card replacement and or iPhone replacement if needed. Keep in mind if iPhone is replaced and same issue occurs, You will want to investigate a possible SIM card issue.
