Speech Recognition: Where and How

Hello,

I am curious to learn of Speech Recognition. I am assuming it is a program that will recognize my voice say certain commands that I tell my computer?
I am wondering how good it is at recognizing commands and applying them? Also, I am not sure how to set it up. Could someone please explain?
Thank you so much.

The built-in speech recognition is somewhat limited. It is not usable for text entry and the command set is limited. It is expandable if you know how to write AppleScripts. Select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "speech recognition" without quotes. All you need will be listed in the results.

It all starts in the Speech preference pane of System Preferences.

If you want true speech recognition including text entry then the only viable product is MacSpeech's Dictate..

Hi Marcello, run Speakable Items and Firefox. While in Firefox, speak, "Define Keyboard Command."

A dialog will come up asking for the key sequence for the command. If you don't have one in mind, try Cmd + P. Click OK. In the next dialog, type "print this page" in the "by saying this phrase" field. Make sure you set the "Use command in" radio button to the current application only, as opposed to all applications. Click Save.

This should add an application specific directory in:

~/Library/Speech/Speakable\ Items/Application\ Speakable\ Items/

For Firefox, it will probably be called, "firefox-bin."
