LAN between iMac OS 10.4 and iMac OS 9.2.2

Can someone provide me with "button by button" instructions for SETTING UP and USING an unsecured LAN between the computers mentioned in the subject of this post?

Various, Mac OS 9.2.x

Thank you for your post. The small business that I am supporting only has one server/client based program and that is Filemaker Pro. This will eventually make the 10.4 system the server. The 9.2 system has the printers attached and must share them with the 10.4 system. I was hoping to have both hard drives visable to both systems for file sharing. As an aside, do you happen to know what version of Filemaker Pro can run under both systems without using the "Classic" mode in 10.4? Thanks again.

First, note the IP addresses for the two Macs. On the Mac OS 9 Mac, open the TCP/IP control panel and the IP address should be shown in that window. On the Mac OS X 10.4 Mac, it is in System Preferences under the TCP/IP tab (or use the System Profiler app).

File sharing from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X 10.4 is definitely possible. Make sure File Sharing is turned ON on the Mac OS X 10.4 side; you do that in System Preferences Sharing pane. FIle sharing does not need to be turned on in Mac OS 9. On the Mac OS 9 side, go to the Apple menu and select Network Browser. See if the Mac OS X 10.4 Mac is visible in the list. If so, select it and go through the login window by giving user name and password and then selecting the volume or user folder to mount. If it is not visible through browsing, you should be able to connect by using the IP address. Click on the little button with an icon that looks like half a globe on top of a hard disk. Select Connect to Server... Enter the IP address for the Mac OS X 10.4 Mac and click Connect.

File sharing from Mac OS X 10.4 to Mac OS 9 will probably NOT work. Mac OS X 10.3 was able to do it, but Apple removed "AppleShare over AppleTalk" starting with 10.4. There is a product that adds TCI/IP file sharing (no need for AppleTalk) to Mac OS 9.

I have this installed on a Mac OS 9 Mac. I can use the Finder's menu -> Go -> Connect to Server... window. Click Browse. The Mac OS 9 Mac shows up on the browse list. If it did not show on the list for some reason, I can enter the Mac OS 9 Mac's IP address on the Connect to Server window and click Connect.

FileMaker Pro version 6 was the last version to run on Mac OS 9. The CD (at least the one I had) also had the Mac OS X version on it, although I'm not sure if it is compatible with later Mac OS X releases. It was definitely compatible with 10.3.

Thank you again for your informative post. One problem though. The 9.2 system can see the 10.4 in Network Browser but cannot connect without a proper password which was lost during the new ownership of this small business. How does one reset a password in 9.2 without knowing the old one? Further, the 9.2 system does not seem to give me the option of logging on to the local system with a different name. Any ideas? Thanks

Your last post helped with getting the OS 9 system to transfer files to the OS 10 but not the 10 to 9. This is workable if that is all that can be done for mutual file sharing. My last obstacle is printer sharing. The 9.2 system has been printing via USB to a Samsung M-1150 for some time. If I connect the printer via USB to the 10.4 system it picks it up and prints right away but even though I have printer sharing enabled in the 10 system sharing prefs and that printer shared in the 10 system print and fax prefs the system 9 does not see it. What are the steps/extentions/drivers needed to print from the system 9.2 to 10.4, or vise versa, via AppleTalk/Ethernet? Also, how does one create a "print screen" image in the Mac environment? Thanks

As I mentioned in my previous post, built-in features of Mac OS 9 do not allow it to be the server for a Mac OS X 10.4 Mac. Mac OS X 10.3 was able to do "AppleShare over AppleTalk" so could connect to a Mac OS 9 server, but Apple removed that ability for 10.4. Alternately, you could buy and install the Shareway IP product I mentioned, which upgrades Mac OS 9 to be able to act as server (using TCP/IP) for 10.4.

Print screen. You can capture the screen in Mac OS X by using Grab application in the Utilities folder. For Mac OS 9...

Cmd-Shift-3 to capture entire screen
Cmd-Shift-4 to capture a portion of the screen (click-drag cursor after giving command)
Cmd-Shift-4-Caplock to capture a window image (click on window after giving command)

The first two also seem to work in Mac OS X.

I'm not familiar with printer sharing. You may want to post another topic with a descriptive subject line about just that question.
