Does the game support Intel-based Macs? (MAC)

At this time we have not announced plans to release a Universal Application update for our older titles to natively support Intel Macs. All existing titles that natively support Mac OS X (including StarCraft) will run on Intel-based Macs via the Rosetta binary translator included with Mac OS X.

StarCraft will require the Mac OS X Native Installer to install and play the game on an Intel-based Macintosh computer. Recent shipments of StarCraft include a Mac OS X Native Installer on the installation disc. However, players without a Native Installer on their installation disc may need to download the installer from our Patch Installation web page.

At this time there is no Carbon version of the StarEdit (StarCraft Campaign Editor) application, and there are currently no plans to create one. StarEdit will not run on an Intel-based Mac as a result since the Classic environment is not supported under Mac OS X.

The problem is that Leopard does not support classic applications. There is a fix however. My suggestion is to reinstall Starcraft using the .iso in this link: http://us.blizzard.com/support/article.xml?articleId=21149&rhtml=true

You want to click the OS X native installer.

Same issue here, the game just dies right after you open it on my new Macbook Pro Penryn.

The issue affects more than just Starcraft, it also happens with Diablo 2 and Giants Citizen Kabuto. These are all OS X based games that would run under Rosetta.

Blizzard knows about the Startcraft and Diablo 2 issues, and are working with Apple. RIght now there is no work around for it that anyone has found.

Blizzard is now saying that this is an Apple fault.

So, Apple, any hope of a fix?

Not very helpful at all. Oh well. Guess I'll have to go back to Windows. Bit embarrassing, I wanted to show the guys the new laptop. Now, I have to say, "You know what? OSX doesn't play Starcraft, no matter what it says on the box or Apple's website."

Well, they cannot spend much time interacting with the public. I know a few apple folks and they are VERY busy (12-15hr work days sometimes). However, they do get the feedback and relevant topics are discussed and bugs are fixed.

Personally? I would have expected a "known issues" list, something saying, "Yes, we know it's a problem, however we currently have more important things to deal with", or if there is no intention of fixing it, perhaps, "This is because the video driver doesn't support a 256 colour mode. We feel that 256 colour modes are passe, and won't be supporting them anymore."

Either would be fine. Black hole silence? Not impressive.

What was impressive was that 3 of my mac-owning friends took it as a personal insult that it didn't work and spent an hour trying.

Mac Owners? Thumbs up.
Apple Support? So far, thumbs down.

So, this is the only information I've found on the Starcraft / OS X problem. I actually had starcraft working on my MPB until I updated to 10.5.3, and now it's broken -- just won't start.

Has anyone else had this problem going from 10.5.2 to 10.5.3?

I just upgraded to 10.5.3 as well and am no longer able to play starcraft. I was playing the game a few hours before I updated while I was at lunch. Once I updated to 10.5.3, Starcraft quits right after the initial 'options' prompt. The screen seems to flicker for a second and the mouse is forced to a specific position on the screen, but it will just not load.

I've got the same problem - worked fine a few days ago, but just quits after the options prompt with the same mouse position change now that I've updated to 10.5.3.

Never fear-- Starcraft 2 is on the way!

For those with Starcraft not working... the issue will be that you have a later model graphics card in your machine and when you investigate how many colours your monitor supports... 256 colours is no longer available as an option. We suspect that Starcraft is trying to switch to 256 colours and cannot and thus quits.
You can hold down the option key when starting starcraft to get some options on gameplay, but choosing other configuration options here does not work.
Perhaps Blizzard could issue a fix by not forcing a change to the colour mode of the machine and let the computer cope with things...

Oh, and 10.5.3 looks to have updated the graphics drivers on later model machines... thus you no longer have a startcraft that will run.

There is a fix. You need 10.5.2 installed on an external drive and boot of that - i.e. your backup copy of your drive - (only works for machines that Starcraft was working on before).
