I just got a new macbook pro and tried to install my copy of starcraft on it. The installation went fine, but afterwards when I opened starcraft, the icon would bounce a couple of times on the dock and then the application would shut down. Can anybody give me advice to fix the problem?
Macbook Pro 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo (penryn),
Mac OS X (10.5.2)
At this time we have not announced plans to release a Universal Application update for our older titles to natively support Intel Macs. All existing titles that natively support Mac OS X (including StarCraft) will run on Intel-based Macs via the Rosetta binary translator included with Mac OS X.
StarCraft will require the Mac OS X Native Installer to install and play the game on an Intel-based Macintosh computer. Recent shipments of StarCraft include a Mac OS X Native Installer on the installation disc. However, players without a Native Installer on their installation disc may need to download the installer from our Patch Installation web page.
At this time there is no Carbon version of the StarEdit (StarCraft Campaign Editor) application, and there are currently no plans to create one. StarEdit will not run on an Intel-based Mac as a result since the Classic environment is not supported under Mac OS X.
This post leaves us with nothing. Blizzard has stated that it is a glitch with OSX and they are saying it is up to Apple fix it.
From what I have been reading, Starcraft and Diablo 2 change the color mode to 256 color. In this latest patch, Apple has completely disabled that color mode. So when Starcraft is unable to load in 256 color mode, it is unable to do so. Thus quits. Of course, this could be wrong.
don't really care who's fault it is, but it seems as if both companies are trying to put blame on the other or at least Blizz is saying that this is apple's problem. I would think this would be Blizzard's responsibility to fix this stuff, i.e. they are developers and should be testing the builds Apple releases, but they are saying Apple should fix it, and we all know how much apple cares about games/gamers so I'm not expecting a fix anytime soon which ***** b/c I was halfway done with BW and this was one of the only games I brought with me to China so I'm stuck having to buy pirated games for half a dollar.

That thread seems to be regarding the issues StarCraft has with the latest MacBook Pro revision (Rev. E) - either some issue with the Penryn processor, video processor, or whatever other hardware changes were made. The last page has some discussion about the 10.5.3 patch (and that older revision MBP's are having problems now), but no comments about it yet from Blizzard.
Starcraft is dated. I think Blizzard should be COMMENDED for keeping it alive for as long as they did. However, the MacOS has advanced, and it is time to bid farewell to some of the old classics. I'm sure Blizzard is devoting most of it's mac resources to putting the finishing touches on Starcraft 2. This should be more than worth the wait and more than worth the sacrifice of giving up support for the original Starcraft.
I agree that they should be commended for making a great game that has the longevity that SC does, but I don't think it's too much to ask for a game to work on a platform that it is purported to work on.
How dare those engineers not travel through time to write code that works on machines from the future. Don't they understand that you have guys to impress? I'm totally blogging about this as soon as I calm down.
Sure, Starcraft is dated, but Blizzard just added it to its new download store, which means that some people (like me) who never really got into it may be playing through it for the first time. It certainly would be nice if I could continue to do so.
If it really is the lack of 256 colours thing, it's not for all drivers... my Quad G5 with the Nvidia 7800GT can play StarCraft fine, even under 10.5.3. On my MacBook Air, however, I see the same issue as the OP.
It is most definitely a video driver issue. The issue first started in the MBP and then started to occur in the regular MBs with the new patch. Starcraft still works perfectly fine in both the iMac and the Mac Mini. Older Macs will probably still be able to play the game as they have a different video card. Issue seems to be related to MBPs and pretty recent MBs from what I have seen.
The main problem I have with this is that I JUST bought Starcraft through the digital download store on Blizzard's site. Even if you go there now, there is ZERO warning that the game will not work on certain Macs. Same goes for the demo of the game on the Apple downloads site.
