I just got a new macbook pro and tried to install my copy of starcraft on it. The installation went fine, but afterwards when I opened starcraft, the icon would bounce a couple of times on the dock and then the application would shut down. Can anybody give me advice to fix the problem?
Macbook Pro 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo (penryn),
Mac OS X (10.5.2)
At this time we have not announced plans to release a Universal Application update for our older titles to natively support Intel Macs. All existing titles that natively support Mac OS X (including StarCraft) will run on Intel-based Macs via the Rosetta binary translator included with Mac OS X.
StarCraft will require the Mac OS X Native Installer to install and play the game on an Intel-based Macintosh computer. Recent shipments of StarCraft include a Mac OS X Native Installer on the installation disc. However, players without a Native Installer on their installation disc may need to download the installer from our Patch Installation web page.
At this time there is no Carbon version of the StarEdit (StarCraft Campaign Editor) application, and there are currently no plans to create one. StarEdit will not run on an Intel-based Mac as a result since the Classic environment is not supported under Mac OS X.
I was looking forward to a lan party, but not so much anymore. I just repurchsed SC, as I lost the disks for my old PC. It will not work with 10.5.3. I agree that it is probably caused by the lack of 256 color support in 10.5.3. On the SC setup panel, there is a greyed out, unclickable, button to choose the monitor. 256 colors may not be the best, but I don't think Apple should exclude people form using it. Please Apple, bring it back in 10.5.4.
I'm really confused. When I tried installing StarCraft it told me that it couldn't even do that because of the whole lack of classic mode in leapard thing. How come all of you were able to get around that (at least to some degree since you ran into anothe issue heh) Thanks!
Your dealing with an entirely different issue, which is caused by a lack of OSX installer on your sc disk. There is an incredibly easy fix for installation... Go to blizzards site, and find the starcraft section, its under patches/downloads... Run that, and it will walk you through instillation :O
But if you have 10.5.3 and a nVidia video card, there's almost no point...
I just skimmed through all the posts here, and it appears that a lot of you guys are putting the blame where there really is no need for blame. Starcraft is a very old game, and it doesn't make much sense to keep older drivers that are outdated, out and running. Yes, it is a drag that a lot of you can't play Starcraft anymore, but with newer technology, there comes a time when older applications/software/drivers or whatever else will become unsupported. The best you can do, is put Leopard in on an external harddrive, or a new partition on your Mac, and boot up under Leopard 10.5.2 so you can play Starcraft. You aren't being forced to stop playing, just stuck having to find a work around to the latest Apple update.
I honestly don't see how this problem is anybody's fault at all. If you want something or someone to blame, blame the ever advancing technology.
Apple is to blame for not specifying in documentation that 10.5.3 would be discontinuing 256 color support. Also, in order to show Apple that this is not in-fact outdated support, I encourage everyone to complain/notify Apple of a need for a change. No one is placing any blame on Apple that is not either deserver or understood to be out of anger. I encourage you to read through again and look at what exactly is being said, its clear to me that no one is truly and sincerely mad at Apple, just upset with the decision to disable 256, and mad that they were not notified ahead of time (especially those who just purchased the game)
Agreed. This, of course, is even more annoying to those of us who actually read the upgrade documentation before installing. We ought to let Apple know that 256 colour support is not outdated yet. It'll take you no more than two minutes, here:
http://www.apple.com/feedback
Unfortunately, I've got nothing to feedback. I'm running off one of the older Intel based MacBooks, and I have no problem with Apple, or any changes they have made to the drivers and OS. It is unfortunate to those who do have this issue with Apple.
But I am running OS X 10.5.3 and I can still support 256 color mode, so it's not entirely just the 10.5.3 update. It's more specifically just a driver compatibility issue with the newer hardware from MacBooks that came out after the one I bought.
Does anybody know how to get the demo of starcraft working? I am going to buy starcraft 2 when it comes out and don't really feel like buying the original starcraft for my mac and will be satisfied with the demo until then.
It just says when I try to open in "classic enviroment no longer supported"...
The OS 9 (i.e. "Classic") demo for Starcraft will not run on the current version of OS X, as the Classic Environment is no longer supported. There is an OS X compliant installer for the full game, however.
I'm having the same problem on my MacBook Pro with 10.5.4. I suppose the nVidia GPU coupled with upgraded drivers in 10.5.3 made 256-bit mode stop working. It really *****, because it's obvious that the game should be able to play, it's just a minor tweak in the graphics driver that's causing it to not work correctly. I really hope either Apple or Blizzard finds a fix for this problem.
StarCraft is surely a dated game, and if it only ran on Mac OS 9 I would have understood the discontinuation of support for it, but since it ran in OS X 10.5.2, it only seems like a glitch that it doesn't anymore.
