iPod 3rd Gen. Nano

What format are the songs in? What bit rate? The number of songs an iPod is "supposed" to hold is predicated on the idea that the songs will be 3 minutes long, 128 kbps AAC files. If your tracks are .wav or Apple Lossless, fewer of them will fit.

You can try restoring your iPod: Hook the iPod up to your computer. In the middle of the Summary page in iTunes, click the Restore button. Note: this will delete everything on the iPod so be sure you have everything backed up.

Also, what size is your Nano really? They come in 4 gigs and 8 gigs, not 9 gigs. Is it really an 8 gig?

In iTunes, select a track, Get Info>Summary. You'll see Kind, Size, Bit Rate.

Preferences>Advanced>Importing. Change your settings to .mp3 or .aac. Then, select the tracks you want to convert and choose Advanced>Convert Selection... Note: iTunes will create a second version of the file in the new format. You will then have two copies of the file. Best of luck.
