attachments received are jibberish

I am using mail.app to access my Groupwise account (IMAP) and my students are required to send me many attachments. Lately (since upgrading to 10.4), I am getting MS Word files and .JPGs and about 1/4 of these attachments show up as jibberish and not as attachments. If i start up Entourage and get my mail, I can clearly see the attachments and download them just fine even though they don't appear in mail.app.

I upgraded my wife to 10.4 just yesterday and now she is experiencing the same thing with MS Word files from her students.

Nope, the problem still exists. For me, it is slightly different. The attachments appear appropriately, but cannot be opened (no matter how you save them). There are generally some attachments in the message that will open. I've come across the problem with Word documents, jpegs, and .abi sequencing files. If the client sending the files is a problem, then include Mail in the list of poor clients. I have had the problem with files I've sent other lab members using Mail. Problem can occur with or without "windows friendly attachments" selected. The files open fine if I access them via webmail, or with my Outlook IMAP setup.

No acknowledgement from Apple that they are aware or working on it. I guess they don't realize that people actually need fully functional e-mail.

Have you had any further luck finding a solution to this problem? I too am experiencing this issue, but only on my new MacBook preinstalled with 10.4.6 (I am running a fully software updated box edition of Tiger on my desktop and that gets the same mails fine. I collect two IMAP accounts, 1 .mac & 1 from my ISP (Blueyonder in the UK)

I have not bothered with the work arounds listed in this thread yet as I can just wait till I get home to view the attachments.
