I wan to rename my computer - but not screw things up

I don't like having my full name spelled out as the owner of the computer, e.g., "george xxxxx's computer. I have read some posts about changing names in accounts and even on used computers. But I am nervous about possibly screwing things up. I'm not sure what might get screwed up, other than when I network with my laptop and/or my older G4.
Any advice? Thanks.

MacPro (wow), Mac OS X (10.4.9), also 10.3.9 on G4desk and Powerbook G4

So, to sum up and add a bit.

You can change your Computer Name (System Preferences > Sharing). This is the one that shows up on computer-to-computer networks you create, and in Bonjour if you turn it on.

You can change your Name (System Preferences > Accounts). This is the one that shows up on the login screen.

You can't easily change your Short Name, which is the name of your home folder (it's grayed out in System Preferences > Accounts). This is what all the posts you read are caused by - people just secondary-clicking on their home folder in Finder and selecting Rename. So, I guess I was incorrect - technically you can easily change the short name (thanks Apple, for making it so easy to screw up something quite badly). You just shouldn't do it that way!

If you want to change your short name, and are intimidated by the Apple kbase article that BDAqua linked to (it intimidates the heck out of me!), you can use Dan Frakes utility (only works with Tiger, but that should be ok for you since you're posting in the Tiger forums):

http://homepage.mac.com/frakes/ChangeShortName.html

(or, if that doesn't work, because he sometimes exceeds his .Mac download limit, go to his home page and click on Change Short Name in the sidebar there.)

Hope this helps...

Thanks all. (I clicked helpful for all and came back but for some reason, the last post now says "solved," and it's not.

I ran into a problem right away when I attempted to change my computer's name. In Sys Prefs>Sharing, I was not sure whether to delete and enter a new name in the field, or, more intuitively, click the Edit button. So I clicked edit, and changed the name in the box that came up. But the name in the field above (Computer's Name) did not change. Instead, now, next Next to the Edit button it says: " other computers on your local subnet can access your computer at XXXXXs-computer.local

Either way should work, so it seems you have a corrupted plist, I'd drag these files to the Desktop & reboot, then setup Networking & Shring again...

/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist

/Users/nnnnLibrary/Preferences/com.apple.internetconnect.plist

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist

PS. It doesn't show Solved anywhere here!?

Before trying deleting the plist files, I went back in and this time ignored the edit button and just entered a new name. When I clicked away from that field, both changed. So, problem solved, apparently.
*The solved issue was that next to the reply button, instead of helpful, it said solved. As it does now on your reply. This time though, I am marking it solved.
Thanks again.
