scale text letters...

Question

scale text letters...

Is it possible to change the x and y dimensions of a font independent of each other? I want to "Squash" a letter so it is wider and shorter, but when I try to resize it, my text box resizes and leaves the letter unchanged, even if it is out of the box.

Mac OS X (10.5.1)

Hi Marco,
As suggested in this thread: select text box and text to copy to new document , Pages treats the text box and the letter(s) within it as different layers. As you point out, you can "squash" the text box, but unfortunately you won't be able to do the same for the letter, at least not within Pages. I have tried doing it with a graphics app, but have so far been unsuccessful.

You can’t change a whole font but you can change a word or phrase. Copy the word or phrase, open Preview and under File click New from Clipboard. Now Save As a Gif and drag into Pages. In the Metrics Inspector deselect Constrain Proportions, then resize as desired.

I should add that if you need to edit you will have to start over because your type is no longer text, but a graphic.

Once again I assumes that this feature is unavailable because it violates the intellectual rights of the font's authors.

Hi,

there's a workaround: If you've got NeoOffice (Openoffice), you can convert Fonts into paths which makes them squash-able 🙂 There are even some real fancy 3D Font Effects if you convert them into 3D.
It's a little tricky, but may work for you. Once upon a time I used Openoffice all the time on the PC, but now i love the ease of use of Pages. But for some tasks, one has to get back to the roots. And sometimes, the roots are better 🙂
