I used Windows XP Pro with SP1 instead of SP2 SP2 will not install

Ok, besides the fact that I did not pay attention to the directions that Boot Camp pdf file instructed. Everything works fine including office and just about everything.
I had thought that I could put in my only copy and update later, this appears to not be the case!

Things seem to fine except for that annoying popup saying I need to install Service Pack 2.

What I would like to know is there anyway that I can get service pack 2 to install. With out purchasing a copy of XP Pro with SP2 and having to blow away all my install.
Or
Get around the error below:
I downloaded the SP2 onto my memory stick and then extract it and when it gets to this part:

Estimating space for uninstallation

Service Pack 2 Setup Error
There is not enough disk space on C:\WINDOWS\$NtService PackUninstall$ to install Service Pack 2, Setup requires a minimum of 4 additional megabytes of free space or if you also want to archive the files for uninsatllation, Setup requires 4 additional megabytes of free space. Free additional space on your hard disk and then try again.

How can this be, I have 20 some Gig that is not used on the disk?

Carolyn:

I have read about this error on these forums several times when SP1 is used instead of SP2 to install Windows XP. I have not found a solution yet except to run bootcamp for the OSx side and remove the Windows partition and combine the into a state that the HD originally was. Once that is done then you will need to run boot camp again and install Windows XPSP2 (A single Disk).

Hi Richard,

as said it's been some years back that I did this and since I have changed the workplace I don't have access to that XP CD anymore.
I remember that I used instructions back then, that were published in a german computer magazine and I do remember to not having any kind of problems.

But it wasn't a corp edition of XP rather than a single license, so maybe there lies your problem.

Seems as if the corp edition plays by different rules when it comes to slipstreaming. Oh well, guess I'll have to use my Single license version to re-install windows. I just hate to have to call up Microsoft, get someone in India, and go through all the hassle of getting another 45-digit activation code each time I re-install my $300 copy of WinXP Pro SP2 and apply 127 upgrade patches.

I'm going to try the old trick of copying the WPA.DBL and WPA.BAK files in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 to a floppy, re-install, and then hope that I can re-load the activation code from the floppy disk. I'm just worried that Windows won't let me do this from my USB Floppy drive.

If this works, I'll let everyone know.

Thanks Stefan

Hi Richard,

as for the hassle with the Windows Updates, have a look at this Tool: http://www.heise-online.co.uk/security/Do-it-yourself-Service-Pack--/features/80 682

It downloads all the updates from the Microsoft servers and makes a 'Update-CD' of it, which can be used again and again.
It also can easily be brought uptodate, when new updates arrives.

I find it very handy.

Have Fun

You seem extremely knowledgeable about this...last night without using half of my not so good brain, I think I've completely ruined my brand new iMac...maybe you can help me here or somone??? I also downloaded the XP SP1 and now I just spent over a hundred bucks on the XP SP2 package. I am so terrified I messed up my new baby for good. I can't get back into my MAC no matter what I've done so far...am I totally messed up?? All I get is a black DOS screen saying that I need to put in a bootable disk...I can't run my MAC set-up at all!!!!
Someone please tell me that tomorrow I can download SP2 over the SP1 and maybe (with lots of prayers) get back into my MAC somehow??? I knew there was a reason I never wanted anymore PC's or Windows!
HELP ME PLEASE!
Thank you,
Danzingnanziez

Hi and welcome to Discussions,

might have been a good idea to start your own thread, but anyway.

Insert your OSX Leopard DVD and restart your Mac while holding the 'C'-key.
Once booted from the DVD choose your language and you are greeted by the OSX installation screen (no worry).
From the Top Menu go to 'Utilities' and from there 'Startup Volume' then choose the OSX partition on your HD as the default startup volume.
Do the needed reboot and it should boot directly into OSX.
Check your OSX partition with Disk Utility for any errors and repair them.

As for your Windows installation, it is usually doomed after what you obvious did.
As said earlier, you can't update a XP SP1 installation with a downloaded SP2 package.
You can however copy your valuable data (if there is any) to your OSX partition while in OSX.
After that is done, use the BootCamp Assistant to repartition your HD to one single OSX partition.
If your XP CD is indeed only SP1 and not SP2, your only chance is the slipstream process mentioned earlier.

Good Luck

Stefan
