Bookmarks Bar Menu Numbers--What Gives?

Safari 3.0.4: Numbers appear next to some of my bookmarks that I've created on the Bookmarks Bar, in parentheses, for instance "News (232)". The numbers take up space, so I try to delete them, but can't. Anybody know what's going on? Thanks

The RSS feature in Safari is really useful and I prefer the way it works to (say) Firefox. If you are an information hound like me, the RSS feeds on all manner of subjects can keep you updated all day without the need to access scores of pages: just click on the titles that look interesting. You will know there is a feed available if you see (using Safari) a blue RSS icon on the right side of the address bar of a site you visit. Click on that and the feed will be displayed.
