How to Daisy Chain two LaCie HDs?

I'm trying to daisy-chain two identical LaCie 360GB external hard drives.

Older LaCie (L.#1) is FireWire connected to my G5, and power source. (Has worked great for months: I got a second one to expand my system.)

I have FireWire connected my new LaCie (L.#2) to L.#1, and to power source. But L.#2 does not appear on desktop or in Disk Utility, or in System Profiler. Same if only L.#1 is powered.

I'm thinking that maybe the last LaCie in the "chain" (L.#2) must be the one connected to G5, instead of the of L.#1? The manual is unclear on this point, but I tried it -- still L.#2 appears nowhere.

What should my connections be, exactly, and/or what am I doing wrong?

Hi! Try this. Unhook any other drives. Then hook the new one up but don't turn it on. Then restart and then after the boot is finished turn it on and then go to disk utility and format it. Tom

Tom,

Thanks. Tried your suggestion; no luck. (By the way, LaCie preformats for Mac.) I think maybe I've got a bad unit. I don't know anything else to do. I've tried connecting with FW800, FW400, and UBS. The G5 just can't see it.

I called the Apple Store where I bought it, and they told me that it should show up on the desktop as soon as it's powered up & turned on. I'll take it in and they'll test it... Thanks again for the help.

Hi S.A. Bidlack-

Do they appear one at a time?

LaCie power supply bricks have been known to fail. If they use the same brick try swapping them. If the power supply has failed LaCie will replace it under warranty if covered. if not you can order them from their website for around $20 US.

Thanks for everyone's help.

I finally decided that I'd purchased a faulty LaCie. Took it back to the Apple Store for them to try, and they had exactly the same experiences. Traded me for a brand-new one.

It works great. All is well.
