Wireless Keyboard is on or off?

I have a Apple wireless keyboard and mouse. I know how to turn off and on the mouse, but how do you know if the keyboard is on or off?

Just a wild guess (as I dont have one yet), but wouldn't hitting the caps loc turn the green light on if the keyboard is on?

If you hold in the on/off button until the green light goes out then it's off, my computer also tells me it's lost contact.

I have tried this and it has NEVER worked for me. I must have the computer off and the bluetooth off in order to turn the wireless keyboard off. Thanks anyway!
