iMac 24 Aluminum screen burn-in?

Hi everyone, I have had this weird screen issue pop up in the last few weeks, It's not the gradient or streaking issue, it looks like a burn in effect as I can see text, icons etc in the background at all times on my iMac, even during boot when the white apple screen is showing.

I have the Aluminum 24 inch iMac 2.4 Ghz.

I am going to post some pictures tomorrow to show this issue, anyone else experiencing this?

iMac Aluminum 24 inch, Mac OS X (10.5.2), 2.4 Ghz, 4 GB Ram, 500 GB

You really should try smcFanControl, i have heard that the computer will run much cooler when you set the RPM on the fan a bit higher, i don't know if its a solution to the displayproblems, but it should make your computer lifetime longer! 🙂

Soo you think that the displayproblems don't getting worse with time? The gradient on the display isnt a bigger problem after two years using? (excuse my english...)

I solved my "burn-in" problem.

Just today I noticed the burn-in problem on my screen and I freaked. I couldn't believe it! I deal with photographs a lot of times and I can't have that interfering with what I see. Then I saw all of you had the same problem.

I read what someone said about heat might cause the problem. I put my hand on top of the iMac and it was blazing hot. Not warm, almost too hot to even touch. So I installed that SMCfancontrol software and my computer was running at 148 degrees. I don't think the fans inside the case were working at all! I immediately shut it down for about 15 minutes took a can of compressed air and blew out the vents. A ton of dust came out.

Now it's been down to 88 degrees but I'd really like to know why my iMac was 148 degrees. Anyway it did not take care of the burn in. I bought two 2" suction cups from Walgreens and lifted the glass screen off (I don't recommend this. It's VERY fragile). Then I massaged the LCD with a microfiber cloth (you cannot use anything else or you'll scratch it!), I restarted and the burn-in was gone.

But I sure as **** am going to make sure I don't leave my screen idle for 10 minutes like it was.

I've had a 24" Silver iMac since Aug '07, and just yesterday started getting burn-in issues. I think the room temp got too hot, and also the iMac. And then since my son left Photo Booth running on his account, I think my screen saver wouldn't cut in. I came back after a few hours last night to see screen on with content, not the usual Flurry saver or black screen.

I've never been obsessed with screen saver, under the false assumption that LCD's don't have burn-in concerns. Just got a quick education on that error, and on the relatively low quality control in Apple production. When you make good looking stuff, I guess you don't have to make it work well underneath in every regard. Style over substance... in Apple's case: form and function over fortitude.

So, now I've learned of JScreenFix, smcFanControl, etc. etc. I have a white screen as saver right now, and we'll see how that goes. I'm gonna blow out the collected dust in a minute, but I'm afraid to get suction cups, pull out the glass, and massage the LCD. Are there any other material remedies that I've missed?

Will report back any beneficial outcomes. Just wanted to chime in and increase the occurrence counter on another iMac with screen burn-in. BTW, mine's an early Silver edition and the screen's great otherwise.

I've had the same problem for a few months now. I started another post with pics on this issue because I wasn't aware of the existence of this one. Here's the pics.

First image: Look at the camera objective reflected: you will see the black line that cross it vertically along the screen.

Second image: This one's darker. On the immediate left of the flash you can notice the line.

I bought my 24" Aluminum iMac back in October 2007 (It was a Tiger machine when I bought it)

The problem started in february. I wonder if i should buy the protection plan before the first year warranty expires just in case Apple decides to do something for this faulty screens...

Right now I'm trying the fancontrol solution to see what happens. Anybody knows to which fan speed is preferable to set the program?

Thanks.

Yep, smcFanControl did the trick. The "burn-in" is fading away.

It's such an hassle that now my iMac is a-humming like an a Capella singer, but it's always better than those pesky lines since I have to do graphics with it. And it's still quieter than any modded computer I've ever owned.

Anyway, my iMac is not MobileMe, so it would be nice if Apple decides to do sometimes for us - a flock of poor image ghosts janitors.

Hope it won't be a 60 days subscription extension.

I have the same problem as you guys only I have it with world of warcraft. A few days ago i noticed that my Action-bars and my health bars of the in-game interface have ''bunred-in'' on to my screen. Now I am trying the fan solution at the moment, but my iMac sounds worse then my old PC now. I was just wondering if anyone has any information on were Apple stands on this issue, are they gonna fix it or are they gonna follow in Microsoft's footsteps. Because I am really thinking of just taking my iMac back and buy me a killer PC machine for the same money.

This guy has our same problem. He's the one who made the great iPod mock-up that's traveling the mac web in these days.

His Alu 24" iMac was stil under warranty and it's now been shipped to the assistance to get a screen replacement.

He's been very kind and he'll keep me updated.

So for who's still under warranty (I am and I'm defenitively buying the 2yr extension) there's still a chance!

I also have the burn-in effect happening on my < 1yr old iMac. Fortunately, I found something that makes it almost unnoticeable. I created a screensaver which "exercises" all the pixels on the screen. It consists of 6 maximum intensity solid color files and 1 black, dimensioned to 1920x1200. They are: red (#FF0000), yellow (#FFFF00), green (#00FF00), cyan (#00FFFF), blue (#0000FF), magenta (#FF00FF) and black (#000000). They are all in a folder which the screensaver cycles through for a couple of hours before going into power save. I've only been doing it for a couple of days now, but the burn-in is now almost undetectable.

I have a 24" White 2.4GHz iMac and have this problem which is quite serious, esp when using Windows via Bootcamp. The Windows "taskbar" stays on the bottom of the screen, and any icons on that taskbar "burn in" to the screen. But that's not all. If a window stays in the same place for any length of time it's edges seem to burn in, so that when it's eventually moved I can clearly see the window in what appears to be outline. This is new to me, and I did not notice this on this machine until quite recently.

The "persistence" note on the Apple site (linked above) is wholly inadequate as a response to the problem. I mean, I could be certain to move everything on my desktop every 3 minutes and that would probably take care of the problem, but that doesn't seem a reasonable solution.

Any other ideas pending?

I have the white 24" iMac. It just started experiencing this & it has gotten quite annoying, so I will bringing it in on Monday.

I took several photographs to show the problem & help my case along. As with others it does seem to (not quite) go away after sitting idle over night & I'm certain when I bring it in (after being off for some time) it will look somewhat normal.

I also have 4 stuck pixels (been then since I bought it) and what can best be described as a muddy appearance mostly in the mid lower part of the display.

I do a fair amount of Photoshop CS4 & Lightroom 2 work. I'm tired of trying so clean up the images only to find it is not my image that has the problem!
