Need old version of Safari--Where can I find it?

I downloaded the new safari 3 today not realizing that my computer could not run it. I did not see the 10.4 requirement. I run 10.3.9. It allowed me to install the program but when I click on the icon nothing happens. Obviously it overwrote the previous Safari.

I have tried to download 1.3.1 update and it will not work "You cannot install this software on this volume. THis system cannot use this software."

I tried 2.0.1 but it requires 10.4.2

Do I have to uninstall the new safari 3 somehow first? If so how would I do that? Then where do I find a version that I can run? I had no problems before.

Thank you.

Hi

it's been a while since I looked into Safari 1.3.x update issues; but as I recall, you'll need an app in your applications folder named Safari, which is version 1.3 - since the 1.3.1 updater makes checks before installing to see that the 'current' version is 1.3

You may be able to find 1.3 at http://www.oldapps.com but the site is unavailable here at the moment, so I couldn't check, but google's cache suggests they only have 1.0, 1.2 and 2.01 .

First, to get an older version of Safari, try:
http://michelf.com/projects/multi-safari/

You can download pretty much any earlier Safari version, bundled with its associated Webkit version, from this site. It's primarily for development testing, but I've used some of them for more general use (because some very useful features of older versions were dropped from 3.x versions).

You may need to move your current version of Safari out of the Applications folder and archive it elsewhere to keep it from being automatically launched when you don't want it (but I wouldn't delete it entirely).

HI Ali,

I have been looking all over these discussions and saw your answer to the other person who did the same thing. I did download Pacifist and tried extracting Safari, but I did not delete the old version first. Does the old version have to be removed first? If so, how, and will I lose my bookmarks etc.
More importantly is that I lost access to mail as well and I really need my saved emails. Do you know how I can Archive and retrieve those if I have to remove and re-install mail?

Thank you for your reply.

You're Welcome L Ryan!

"...did not delete the old version first. Does the old version have to be removed first?"
Yes.

"...will I lose my bookmarks etc."
You may be able to save the Bookmarks, if the incorrect upgrade did not corrupt them, but there are no guarantees.
The other Safari settings, are easily recreated. What else would you be concerned about losing?

You're Safari Bookmarks are stored in two locations.

HD > Users > Your Account > Library > Cache > Metadata > Safari: HERE Bookmarks folder.
HD > Users > Your Account > Safari: HERE Bookmarks.plist file.

If you delete Safari from the Applications folder, those two items should not be affected, but to safe, before deleting Safari, make copies and put them on the Desktop.

Also navigate to HD > Users > Your Account > Library > Preferences.
In that folder, locate and also move to the Trash this file com.apple.Safari.plist.

Once you have reinstalled Safari, restart and then run Repair Permissions.

Check to see if Safari is functional, and if your Bookmarks are there.

"Do you know how I can Archive and retrieve those if I have to remove and re-install mail?"
Deal with Safari first.

You're Again Welcome L Ryan!

Navigate to HD > Applications: Move Safari to the Trash.
Navigate to HD > Users > Your Account > Library > Preferences: here, locate and move to the Trash this file com.apple.Safari.plist.
Navigate to HD > Library > Receipts: Move to the Trash Safari.pkg & Safari31UpdUniv.pkg.

You're Safari Bookmarks are stored in three locations.

HD > Users > Your Account > Library > Cache > Metadata > Safari: HERE Bookmarks folder.
HD > Users > Your Account > Safari: HERE Bookmarks.plist file.
I found another one!
HD > Users > Your Account > Library > Safari: Bookmarks.plist file.

If you delete Safari from the Applications folder, those items should not be affected, but to safe, before deleting Safari, make copies and put them on the Desktop.
Be sure to note the original location of each item, in case you need to put them back.

Once you have reinstalled Safari, restart and then run Repair Permissions.
Download and install the 10.3.9 Combo Update.
Restart.
Run Repair Permissions.
Run Software Update and install any additional Safari updates.
Restart.
Run Repair Permissions

Check to see if Safari is functional, and if your Bookmarks are there.

I'm not sure how upgrading Safari affects Mail, as I don't use Apple Mail, but for now, just make copies of all your Mail folders, and place them in a folder on the Desktop.
Again noting the original locations.

Maybe correcting Safari, will also repair Mail.
Don't know yet.

I have to be away for a bit, but if you can wait a while, I'll be back to post more extensive info about the Mail folders.

And Thank You, for extending the courtesy, of awarding User uploaded file User uploaded file in  Discussions, as this is not a requirement, nor mandatory, but is much appreciated!

Hi

if the Safari 3.1 installer let you run it - sadly you have more problems than you realise yet....

the installer adds or modifies all the files you see here

whilst it's possible to obtain correct for 10.3.9 versions of all these, place them manually & then have to run safari & (possibly) other updates.... If you're in a rush to get Mail working, then I'd advise an archive & reinstall as being quicker/easier.

Ideally(!), installers make basic system & other version checks before running - from what you say , this one doesn't - I haven't checked the installer scripts yet to see if they exist in this case.

If you locate the safari app, highlight it & press Command-I - you'll see a window which includes the version number.... if ( as seems likely ) yours is now 3.1... then yikes, the installer did work.

well I'm puzzled, since os x 10.3.9 should have at least safari 1.3, and if all updates have been run, it'd be safari 1.3.2, you seem to have the base install 10.3 version of safari.

try another check then, and apologies in advance if my Tiger is different from your 10.3.x.....

In finder, choose Go-Go to Folder... and paste this path in /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/versions/A/Resources

in the folder you see, choose the file version.plist and open it in textedit - look for a line with CFBundleShortVersionString in it - for 10.3.9 it should be 312.x ( depends on what updates have been made, could be from 312.1 thru 312.8.1 )

If yours says 4525.13 then yes, the installer ran for the bits that matter here.

Hi Ali,

Thank you for taking the time to help with this.

I have completed everything you suggested up to:

Once you have reinstalled Safari, restart and then run Repair Permissions.
Download and install the 10.3.9 Combo Update.
Restart.
Run Repair Permissions.
Run Software Update and install any additional Safari updates.

Unfortunately my Software update from the apple does not function. So, not sure if there is anything else missing.

Safari is still not opening. Neither is mail.

As I said to the other person who tried to suggest fixes below, my Safari is coming up as version 1.1 but at least now it is showing that I modified it today.

Am I looking at re-formating the entire OS?

Should I extract Mail and see if that repairs?

Hi Andy,

Thanks for your help.

This is what I Found:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>BuildVersion</key>
<string>2</string>
<key>CFBundleShortVersionString</key>
<string>4525.13</string>
<key>CFBundleVersion</key>
<string>4525.13</string>
<key>ProjectName</key>
<string>WebKit</string>
<key>SourceVersion</key>
<string>45251300</string>
</dict>
</plist>

So it ran the installer.

I have since trashed safari and re-installed from the boot CD. As suggested from Ali.

That did not work either.

Not sure where to go from here.

You're Welcome Larry!

"Unfortunately my Software update from the apple does not function. So, not sure if there is anything else missing."
Don't worry about Software Update right now.
Download from here 10.3.9 Combo Update, and install.

Then continue with the instruction I Posted Here.

Do you know exactly which version of Panther 10.3.x is installed.
If it is not 10.3.9, that would explain the difference in the Safari version number.

From the contextual menu, select About This Mac.
What version number is displayed?

Do you have a system backup, or at least have everything you would not want to lose backed up?

Hello Ali,

I did follow all of those instructions after the 10.3.9 Combo Update. Still no help.

Yes it is 10.3.9 that is running.

I have been backing things to an external HD for the past few days since this has happened.

I was also wondering if there are other mail programs that I could import my old saved mail into. I opened my entourage for the first time today but of course Microsoft doesn't have a way to bring in mail from Mac mail. I also tried the outlook express in the OS9 folder but it can't import either.

Hi All

Been reading with intent as I had the same prob as dowloaded wrong update of Safari.

I've followed Ali's instructions above, however reinstalled an old update at http://michelf.com/projects/multi-safari/ and this seemed to create a working copy of safari, not sure why? My mail still won't open...update won't work so prob not solved yet? Unfortunately all my bookmarks are gone so be careful if you are going down this route....
