Every time I try to connect to my PC I always get "the finder cannot complete the operations because some data in smb://192....../files could not be read or written. (error code -36)." But when I'm on my PC, I can get files from my powerbook. Also I can not ping my pc from the powerbook, but I can ping my powerbook for the pc. Can someone help me with this problem?

The Pinging I can understand. If i remember right the way Windows deals with pings is that it ignores them, maybe i'm wrong, but thats what i remember. MacOSX is configured to respond to them by default. If you can connect to your Windows Box are you logging in as yourself, or as a guest. Another thing to try would be using Microsoft's Remote Desktop Connection and see if that works out, just to make sure that you can connect.
I just want to be able to transfer files from my pc to my powerbook, but I can always get the error 36 when I go to connect to server. I'm doing everything right, my pc firewall is off, my windows sharing is check off, and smb/cisf is check off, the workgroup are the same with my powerbook and pc. Can anybody give an answer to this error and why I can not connect to my pc from my powerbook?
Hi Randi,
Can you help by providing the Windows version that's on the PC?
There are some specific things to do, depending on that.
Have you found anything by searching this Discussions Group (getting online..) for keywords like '36' or 'error 36'?
Is there an account on the PC with the same shortname as you have on your mac? Same password? Sometimes this will help. Need more info on WinVersion.

Can you connect going the other way?

My pc has windows xp with sp2, it also has an account, I use the same username and password for both my pc and powerbook. The only thing I found helpful was a website tell me that os x uses encrypted passwords to connect to servers, and for me to connect to my pc I have to change my powerbook to plain text passwords and I followed the steps to change it, and it still doesnÂ’t work. But on my pc if I go to start > run, and type \\powerbook ip addresss\powerbook username, it works. ItÂ’s when I go to connect to server from my power book it wonÂ’t work. I donÂ’t know if its my pc or my powerbook because my windows sharing is check off, and smb/cisf is check off, and I can not ping my pc, but I can ping my router from my powerbook, but from my pc I can ping the powerbook and the firewall is off.
1) Pinging the XP by name doesn't, or pinging by IP doesn't work?
a) Can you ping it by IP only? Go to tne properties of the LAN connection and enable NetBios. Now the name should be pingable.
2)XP has some digital signing that you might be able to get to easily if you have XP Pro (this job will be tougher if it's XP Home)
2a) Which XP have you got?
2b) Search this group for the phrase 'digital signing' and there are several references to XP/Samba
3) I would not leave your mac sending unencrypted passwords. Reverse that step.

The XP firewall is off, or the Mac firewall?
Any messages about SMB in finder->applications->utilities->console->

Guillaume,
This is probably from being unable to receive data from the adapter or from the server. Are your adapters/cables/routers OK? Is this ethernet, wireless, or other?
What kind of a server is it?

I use Wireless (from PCMCIA)to get my data from server. To access internet I use Netlock VPN Client for Cisco 3000 from compagny Netlock Technologies Inc.
I have the exact same problem.
- I used to be able to log in to my PC using SMB for 2 years
- Since I upgraded my Airport Express to 6.2 it stopped working
- I downgraded to 6.1.1 with no luck
- I can access my PC using VNC
- I can still access my Mac from my PC (Windows XP2)
- Trying to connect to the IP number via Samba results in a time out:
mount_smbfs: negotiate phase failed: syserr = Operation timed out
- Trying to connect to my server name results in following error:
mount_smbfs: can't get server address `PC':
Unknown host
mount_smbfs: can't get server address: syserr = Network is down
I searched all forums but found no working solution. Any hints? I was thinking of setting up an FTP server on my PC as an alternative. Is there some downside to FTP versus SMB?
All help appreciated

This is just amazing. After I tried to connect to my server using ftp I was able to log in again using the normal samba method.
Guess I solved my own problem, hope it works for others as well...

It turns out that on my PC I had Norton SystemWorks installed, and it was blocking the SMB port. That why I could not log on to my PC from my Powerbook. I'll I did was add the SMB port on my PC as any expceptions or turn off the SystemWorks, and now it works.
sorry iPeleus, could you please explain how you solved the problem again 🙂
I have the same problem, except my console log/message says: "mount_smbfs: negotiate phase failed: syserr = Operation timed out"
so did you go "Connect to server" and instead of putting smb://... you put ftp://... is that correct??
cos that didn't work for me unfortunately 😟
well i did get asked for my username and password when i connected via the ftp way... but then get error message "Could not connect to the server because the name or password is not correct".. which is not the case, because they are correct 😟

so i have gone "connect to server", and used FTP instead of smb...
i now get asked to enter in username and password.. which i do, my PC username and password... but then i get a message saying "could not connect to the server beacuse the name or password id incorrect"
but it IS correct... and i have set up the workgroups to be the same too...
what could it possibly be??... arrrgh, i'm going crazy here!! :-S
