HP Photosmart C7280 All-in-One Printer?? Newly installed, won't print docs

Friends, I've just bought my first iMac and got a printer on promotion (rebate) at the Apple Store. It took me 7 minutes (literally) to set up my iMac, and about 45 minutes to set up the printer. Everything seemed fine. The printer / scanner / fax seems to communicate with my iMac just fine EXCEPT IT WON'T PRINT from my computer (MS Word 2008 or gmail or anything else.) I receive scans from the machine to my computer, no problem.

When I send a document to print it goes into the queue, but the status says: STOPPED. I have reloaded the driver, etc. Everything else works fine (as before), but STILL NOT ABLE TO PRINT FROM MY COMPUTER other than the test pages. (test pages also work fine. No issue.)

I have NO idea what to do. I have contacted HP. They were useless. Told me they no longer have telephone support for Mac. I needed to use the chat function on their website. Did that. Then the chat guy told me they no longer support the chat service for Macs and I needed to send an email. I sent an email and they sent an auto reply that told me to do what I had just done before. Arrrrh.

So, if I don't get this problem solved quickly, I'm taking the printer back. Looks nice. The photocopies are nice. The scans are nice, etc. etc. etc. But if I can't print my most important docs, what's the point?

Oh, and it is wireless. If I attach a USB and forget the wireless, will this then work?

FRUSTRATED and looking for any guidance.

Thanks guys.

Friends, thanks for the first to responses. Alas, the problem is still unresolved.

The first 2 responses are only somewhat helpful. The printer I have is a wireless. So are you suggesting that if I use a USB cable instead that the problem will disappear? Should be worth trying.

Second, I have installed the new driver 3 times and the same identical problem persists.

To be clear: The test printing from the computer to the printer works. No problem. The test page emerges perfectly. But when I go to print a document (whether DOC, PDF, TXT, XLS, or JPG) the print jobs get stuck in the queue with a status showing STOPPED. Nothing happens. I can't alter the status and get them moving through.

Remember: I'm trying to establish the capacity to print wirelessly, but if a USB cable will solve the problem I would happily do away with the wireless function. This is crazy.

Any other ideas?

Anyone else having this problem of all print jobs being STOPPED in the queue?
(Note: the test printing works fine which is totally curious. It does not get stopped.)

Thanks to all for any guidance or ideas.

Rick DC

PS: The lack of support from HP and MAC for these kinds of issues is frustrating, particularly since Mac actually promotes this specific product with its own computers. From what I can see on this board, there are a lot of issues with leopard and wireless printers of all kinds. I guess I'm in good company.

Yeah, I think it is the installer or the driver software. Not MSWord or text writer or anything like that. It's weird because the computer and printer are clearly connected wirelessly. They communicate, it's just that I can't print anything other than the test page. It's kind of frustrating. I'm also new to Mac, so that doesn't help, but from what I can tell from this chat board and from HP's reaction to Mac... there is clearly an issue with Leopard and wireless printers! I'm wondering if I should just run out and snag a USB cable to see if that works...and drop my fantasy of having a wireless printer in another room. I'm so outraged by the lack of support from HP that I'm tempted to just return the thing... but I may end up with the same problem with another printer. Who knows? What are you thinking the problem might be? Thanks for the suggestions. Really grateful to you and all the folks out there on this chat board.

OK, this is really weird. I open a PDF. I try to print one page. In "STATUS" it says "Printing" and then it disappears without printing. This is different from the problem with Word or TXT where the STATUS indicates "Stopped." I'm just not getting this. It STILL won't print, but the STATUS for PDF is different.
Hmmm. Are we getting closer to a solution???
thanks for making me feel like we are, at least.
I'm open to any other ideas that will bring me closer to my fantasy of having this thing work wirelessly...
Even if this doesn't work, you're still a god. You've given me hope!

Oh my God! You people are amazing.

I reset the printing as indicated and then I went into the Word DOC and selected "print"... no printer showed up so I had to selected (identify) a new one (the same printer that was there before but no longer appeared). I did that and... VOILA! It printed my DOC!!!
Thank you thank you thank you thank you..... THANK YOU ALL!!!

The webpage that I was given by my new best friend has the following directions on it... which I followed... but then you need to be sure when selecting "print" under the FILE menu that you then choose a printer since the printers listed beforehand were probably deleted in the "reset" process.

I LOVE YOU AND I RELIVE! THANK YOU ALL!!!

Mac OS X: About the Reset Printing System feature

* Last Modified on: November 05, 2007

* Article: 301185

With Mac OS X 10.4, 10.5 or later, Printer Setup Utility includes a Reset Printing System feature, a troubleshooting function that you might want to use after you try all other printing troubleshooting steps. Important: This feature should only be used as a "last resort" for troubleshooting a printing issue.
What does Reset Printing System do?

* Deletes all printer queues and jobs.
* Resets all printer settings to their default by deleting configuration files.
* Performs a permissions check on the /tmp directory.

Any devices that previously appeared in your Printer List and Fax List will need to be added again after resetting the printing system.
Resetting the printing system in Mac OS X 10.5.x

1. To use the Reset Printing System feature in Mac OS X 10.5.x, follow these steps:
2. Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
3. Choose Print & Fax from the View menu.
4. Control-click on list of printers on the left side of the window, then choose "Reset printing system" from the contextual menu. If you don't see a list of printers, Control-click on the text "Click + to add a printer or fax" and select "Reset printing system..."

As an alternative, if you currently have one or more printers listed, you can Option-click the "-" (Remove printer) button.

Resetting the printing system in Mac OS X 10.4.x

To use the Reset Printing System feature in Mac OS X 10.4.x, follow these steps:

1. In the Finder, choose Utilities from the Go menu.
2. Open Printer Setup Utility.
3. From the Printer Setup Utility menu, choose Reset Printing System.
4. Click Reset.

Tip: If Printer Setup Utility won't open at all (possibly due to your printing issue), you can try to access the Reset Printing System feature directly by holding down the Option key while opening Printer Setup Utility.

I received a response from HP Email support today.

Below is the text of how they say to handle the problem (though I have never done this, it may be useful to someone else... I simply followed the earlier instruction which was much easier and seems to have solved the problem):

-------------------------

Hello,

Thank you for contacting HP Total Care.

I do apologize for the misinformation. There is support for the Macintosh system. The support group is located only in Ontario, Canada. It is opened Monday to Friday from 8:00 am until midnight and on Saturday from 11:00 am until 6:00 pm, Eastern Daylight time. There is no phone support on Sunday.

As for chat support, The Live Chat support is for Windows customers only. The platform uses Active X program, which is not compatible with the Mac OS. There is only phone support and email support for the Macintosh system.

The issue you are having is with the print system. Please answer the following questions in order to troubleshoot further.

1. Click on the Apple, top menu bar, and select System Preferences. Click on Print and Fax. Highlight the Photosmart C7200 series in the list and click on the minus ➖ sign. This will remove the printer from the list. Restart the computer. Go back into Print and Fax. Click on the plus ➕ sign. This should
add the printer back into the list. Close this window. Open the Hard Drive/Applications/TextEdit. Type
your name into TextEdit. Click on File, top menu bar, and select Print. Make sure the Photosmart C7200 series is selected as the default printer. Click Print. Are you having the same issue?

2. If you are having the same issue, click on the Apple, top menu bar, and select System Preferences. Click on Print and Fax. Hold the Control key down on the keyboard and click inside the printers list. From the menu, select Reset Printing System. When the reset is completed, click on the plus ➕ sign.
When the printer has been added to the list, open TextEdit. Type your name into TextEdit. Click on File, top menu bar, and select Print. Make sure the Photosmart C7200 series is selected as the default printer. Click Print. Are you having the same issue?

3. What program or application are you printing from?

4. Do you have this issue with all programs and applications or just certain ones?

5. Did you install the software for the Photosmart C7280 using the CD or did you go to hp.com website, download and install the latest drivers?

6. If after trying the steps above and you are still having the same issue, please follow these steps.

I am sending you steps to do a manual uninstall. I am also sending you a link to download the latest drivers.
