just a thought, but have you installed bonjour on your pc('s). Theres software by apple and i seem to remember it having an affect on my networking by installing it. Here it is:

Ryan-
Are you telling this user that he should install it, or not?
Did it have a good "affect" on your network, or did things get funny, like for the original poster?
Thanks

Simon - did you find any solutions here? Did we lose you?
well, either way its not going to do any harm and it can only set the machine up for connecting to bonjour. I have tried it and i still have the problem but i'm pretty sure once i did it, it allowed both machines to connect to each other. With this problem as i'm sure Derrick will find, the pc can connect to the mac however it is not possible to connect to the pc from the mac (as it brings up the alias message). Ryan

Yeah thanks for all this - No I don't think its Bonjour (or the lack of) thats causes this problem.
Ok by every install of Tiger I mean - the 2 G5 on our work network, the 20' iMac & 12' Powerbook at home, and others I've attemped this on along the way.
As for the PCs - the issue occours on the numerous PCs, all pretty much are SP2, some with Norton Systemworks 05, some with AVG and one with no Virus Checker. I've enabled and disabled the XP firewall accross all of them.
=UPDATE=
I've figured it and it is being caused by Hamachi ( http://hamachi.cc), a super useful VPN client (currently on XP & Linux) that allows a completely secure mediated peer to peer VPN. Its amazing but for now its also the cause of my issues. When its closed/disabled, its working, when I open it - beachball. It maybe an issue with OSX or XP dealing with computers with 2 IP addresses (as Hamachi makes a new IP set). I've found a post on it here - http://forums.hamachi.cc/viewtopic.php?t=272&highlight=osx, I'll work through it and post the results here - hopefully I can figure out to get them to work together harmoniously.

Hi Todd,
Can you connect to any shared folders under the root of "C"?
Like, make a new folder SharedTest, share it, allow All users, or everyone full access, and then try to connect to that.

No Go. The mac sees it (after I click connect it is in the drop down). Same error. I tried to delete the share and re-add. manually connect under finder menu. nada.
Hmm.
open my computer>Tools>ViewOptions, and untick "Simple file Sharing".
and;
ControlPanel>AdministrativeTools>Sharing>ComputerBrowser...set to manual, and stop that service. Reboot PC.
That's very weird that you can open your "F" dirve, but not "C". Not sure where to take you from here.
Maybe google.

Those step I assume are for XP. I may not have mentioned I have win2000pro. I cannot seem to find equals in 2000.
I also have zone alarm running. I am going to disable it and try a new share.

Look into the settings in ZoneAlarm, to configure the Adapter.
There's a choice to set adapter in Internet Zone or Local Area Zone.
make it Local Area...
Z.Alarm doesn't need disabling, it probably needs configuring.
And yes, those are primarily XP. You didn't mention 2000Pro.
Also, check this:
The following options should be set in the Security Options section of the Local Policy . The settings dealing with SMB and Secure Channel are of particular importance if Microsoft Networking and Resource Sharing are to be used.
Note: These policy settings just create and set registry keys (that is, they are just a pretty interface for the recommended registry keys settings).
Digitally Sign Client Communication (Always) Disabled
Digitally Sign Client Communication (When Possible) Enabled
Digitally Sign Server Communication (Always) Disabled
Digitally Sign Server Communication (When Possible)

OK here is an article that fixed my problem.
This needs to be done on the PC you are trying to connect to.

Hope it helps.

Thanks Todd...didn't realize you were getting the "insufficient memory on the server" error!
Glad you tracked that down...(Norton Antivirus, right?)
