I did not "know" I was getting the "insufficient memory on the server" either, until I tried to connect from another PC. The mac did not give me a real error.
I am trying to connect to my windows xp network from my mac, which I have done before with out problems and now I get an error saying can not find alias. I have changed the windows xp computer name and then back and nothing works.

Yes, I believe one of the links said Norton changed the registry setting. Thanks Pete!

Yeah, same problem here - except on a much larger scale. We have the problem with trying to get our 25 eMac's & Mac server to connect to Windows Servers & clients (about 50 - 80 odd PC's) and it comes up saying:
The alias "computername" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found.
Delete Alias - Fix Alias - OK.
Any help for this on a global scale?

i too have the problem connecting to a windows machine. the most puzzling is that i am told it "cannot find the alias" . if i select delete alias i am told i do not have sufficient privileges - however it is my computer so i should.
if i select "fix alias" the windows machine i am trying to connect to is greyed out so that i cannot select it to "fix alias".
i used to be able to connect. is this something wrong on the windows machine side or the MAC side?

check that 'use simple file sharing' is disabled in explorer->Tools->Folder Options->View
Tried all the hints on here with no luck till I realised that was the only differnce between the freshly re-installed PC and one that worked, fixed it for me.

P.S Just went back to simple file sharing and ran thru the network setup wizard and that works ok as well so not sure how useful my last post actually is 🙂
i can have my bro's PC connected to my Powerbook but i cannot do the other way around..
i had read it was due to something on the windows side...
but it is wierd that it is the Mac that does not 'see' the alias that has 'not changed'.... it keeps telling me that it was changed or removed....

Hi Sungyub Han, have you tried connecting by apple+K smb://
IP address_ofPC and see if that works? if it does try the alias again. If you open command prompt in windows and type ipconfig, it'll give you your IP. THis seems to have fixed my aliases on a network tha hadn't changed.
Cheers.

doing the smb:// is when I realised it must be something on my laptop as that always works for me and used to work to the laptop as well. As I said earlier it turned out it was because I was using simple file sharing on the laptop after I had re-installed it
ok i'll give it a try....
thanks...
ps: but as i dont really know which ones i have to 'allow' under System Pref>Sharing>Firewall>..... i just 'allow them all'......
