Cd Drive rejects all cd's!

Our brand new imac rejects any cd we put in. When we insert the cd the Mac takes it and after 5 seconds ejects it. It does not open itunes. We have the preference settings set correctly. Am I missing something?

We have exactly the same issue. DVDs ( Data + AV) & Blank CDs are fine but Audio and Data CDs are not working/ mounting. After a short time - perhaps 10-15 secs the CD is spit out by the drive. It's a brand new iMac 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo that we turned on just yesterday. I have reset the PRAM. Not sure what else to try. Given that the drive reads other things ok - I can't see that it's a hardware issue....Any thoughts?

The Mac is brand new so the prefs in system prefs are set to default. So yes Itunes should open. In fact I have now been able to open an audio CD and import it into iTunes as normal. - but the problem is now intermittent. I guess we'll need to keep an eye on it. I really don't want the computer to go back to the Apple Store... just a pain in the backside to reinstall everything...

Even if it is already set that way, I'm suggesting you change it to something else (to rewrite that preference file), such as "ignore." Once you see that it mounts to the desktop consistently without taking any action, select Open iTunes again.

If it is still unreliable when set to "ignore," I would consider other trouble-shooting. For example, you can create another admin user account in System Preferences Accounts. Log out and log in to that new account. Does the problem happen when using that account?

Brand new 20" iMac (2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo) circa October 2007.

DIscovered problem during install of Windoze XP. Disk drive would not mount CD. Obviously NOT a software problem as was trying to boot off of it.

I was able to make a duplicate disk on my MacBook, and was able to install. Peculiar?

Experimented with numerous CDs - the mac only ones are fine. The Windoze or hybrid ones do not mount.

Back to the store for service...
