HP Toolbox Won't Work

I've seen this mentioned in other posts, but none of the fixes have worked for me, so I thought I'd give it a shot:

I have an HP Deskjet 5150 inkjet printer. It works fine. But HP's Toolbox won't work, so I can't get ink levels or clean print heads, etc. The problem first cropped up when I upgraded to Tiger (erase and install). I have attempted to uninstall and reinstall the latest HP driver (2.7.1) repeatedly, to no avail. I say attempted because the uninstaller, while it reports a successful uninstall each time, gives me error messages about changed headers and not being able to delete all the files because they were in use or not created by the installer. The other threads on this issue report success with different HP printers by deleting (Users) Library\Printers\HP directory after uninstalling, and THEN reinstalling, but I've got no such directory on my computer after uninstalling.

Does anyone have any idea what I can do to get the toolbox to work?

I'm having the same problems. I have a Deskjet 960c and I've tried reinstalling the drivers but I still get an 'Error 1001' when I try and read the ink levels. I just hate to waste money buying both color and black ink cartridges when I might only need one.

I'm hoping Apple posts something soon, because I get the feeling HP certainly won't.

I actually got relief on this from HP's help desk. I don't know if this will work with a 960c, but here's what they told me to do to get Toolbox working for my Deskjet 5150 with OSX 10.4.2:

Go to Macintosh HD>Library>Printers>HP. Delete the "Utilities" folder found there.

Restart the Mac.

Download the 2.6 driver for the Deskjet 6840 from the HP web site and perform a custom install to install ONLY the Toolbox, and not the driver.

Worked like a charm for me. Again, HP specifically said the Toolbox for a Deskjet 6840 will word for my Deskjet 5150, but I don't know if that's the case for your printer as well.
