HP Laserjet 4000n ethernet connection not working

Please, someone help! I've been trying to connect my HP Laserjet 4000n to my Mac since I upgraded to Tiger with no results. Here's my stats:
Mac G4, built-in ethernet to Intel InBusiness Hub, to HP printer.

I've contacted HP, they said I need the driver. I paid $17 for a copy of a CD with driver I already had (i.e. Classic version). Of course, that didn't work.

According to Network Status ethernet is active so it's not that. It could be the cable but I've switched it out to a couple of different cables, and got nothing.

I've even tried connecting directly to the printer using a CAT 5 cable with no results.

Any suggestions?

The driver for that printer is included in Tiger.

I suspect your network isn't configured properly. You need to configure OS X with a manual IP address like 192.168.1.10. Then turn on appletalk. Then Add the printer.

If this doesn't do it, tell us more about your network setup - how do you connect to the internet, for example.

thanks greg... however I need you to be a bit more specific.... where do I configure my IP address? In the network setup? and do I use the IP of my printer? could you walk me through it as I'm concerned doing this will mess up my internet connection.

I connect to the internet via airport card to a dlink wireless router. I have no problems connecting to internet. I'm just having issues with connecting to my printer.

Oh, those were very important details about your network!!!!

I recommend you connect the hub to the router (and keep the printer connected to the hub). Now do a test print on the printer (from LCD panel or button on back of printer). The printout will have the printer's IP address.

Now compare the printer's IP address to your computer's address (found in Network Prefs Show Airport). You need the first three dot-separated numbers to be the same (this is called being in the same subnet). Like 192.168.1.xxx - only the xxx should be different.

If that's good, go to Printer Setup (or Printing & Faxing Prefs) and ADD ➕. Click IP Printing at the top of the Printer Browser window, then select HP JetDirect for protocol and enter the printer's IP address. Now go to the bottom and select Print Using: HP Laserjet 4000 series. Finish by clicking ADD. and now try it.

Hi greg. thanks again. No, this didn't work either. My printer address is 192.0.0.192 and I've tried this several ways and still nothing.

should I be unplugging the router or hub? restarting the Mac? If so in what order? routher first then hub or vice versa...... I tried this, but still didn't work. Probably didn't do it in the right order..... any other suggestions?

That printer address is a default that you must set to a correct number - 192.0.xx.xx is not a local address. You need to set it to a number in your router's subnet (the router controls what the subnet is). Keep the router and hub plugged in. I don't have your printer - can you change the IP address from the front panel? If not, then you can from the OS X Terminal - you connect to the printer with this:
telnet 192.0.0.192
Then follow the instructions there to change the address.
I'm sorry this isn't easier...

You can change the ip address on the front panel, although I recomend using the telnet method suggested by Greg since it is much easier and there is less chance of setting the ip address inccorectly (I think there is anyway).

I was having the same problem with the same printer yesterday. I tried everything I could find on this and other forums and nothing worked. On a whim, I did a cold reset. Turn your printer off, turn it back on with the go button pressed. This activated appletalk.

I was then able to go to my printer set up utility. Click the "Add" button. Click the button that says "More Printers". My printer finally showed up in the list. I selected the printer and selected the driver for the Laserjet 4000, and it finally works!

OH MY GOD!! Kevin...... I'M PRINTING!! ha ha ha!! Thank you, thank you, thank you to EVERYONE with your suggestions! I appreciate your help. As a graphic designer I can't believe how crippled I felt not being able to print anything!!
