iMac never returns from its sleep mode.

Hello!
My G5 iMac has been acting weird for the last 5 months. First, it would go to sleep and not wake up. The light would go off but nothing appear on the screen. Lately, it just goes to sleep, and, after a couple minutes, it just shuts itself off.
I took it to the store, the guy ran a hardware test. (Note: this happened 2 days before the extd. warranty expired). He said it was the memory and I needed to get new mem sticks. I did get it from Crucial, because $400 dollars from Apple seems a little expensive.
Well, the computer is still going to sleep...but it's not waking up! OF course, the extended warranty has expired now.
I will get the extended warranty again, take it to the store and hope they don't tell me it's MY memory. MAybe it's the memory slots?

If you have any thoughts, please, help me! 🙂 I love my iMac, don't want it to be a mediocre iMac.

Thanks!

-Pedro

Oh, man! Really? Well, thank you for replying to my post.

You know this is the second time I change the memory. The first sticks lasted 3 years, so I thought they were just bad. But now these new ones did not fix the problem. The Apple guy said I needed to get Apple memory. Now, how can $400 memory really fix my problem and who assures me that?

I will check out that Apple Pro Care thing.

Thanks again!

"you still pay for repairs."

Not for minor repairs (software related). At least at the AS in my area. I haven't checked with my local vendor yet.

I really think it depends on the AS.

Recently, there was a post (which I can't find) where the AS techs paid for hardware repairs. The user's AC ran out & he only had ProCare coverage. Apparently, that city's AS went over & beyond what the coverage called for.

Well - I am running into the same problem with my iMac G5. And I don't believe that it has anything to do with the memory. Does anybody have any idea where I should begin to look for "the problem"? If I put the computer into the sleep mode, it simply shuts off.....most of the time. Though sometimes, it will actually go into the sleep mode and the power light will flash as it used to do. I cannot help but wonder if this is some software issue with one of the upgrades. I am running Tiger 10.4.11. I didn't have any of these problems until a few weeks ago. I have just ordered Disk Warrior to see if there is something that can be corrected with that software. But so far, using the latest version of ONYX, the hard disk checks out fine. Everything is as optimized as it can be with ONYX...though the Warrior sample software tells me that the disk is still fragmented 36%!!! Go figure that one out? How can two software programs be so far off regarding the state of the optimization? Something is not quite right.....looking for ideas.....

Man! Finally, someone who unfortunately has the same problem as I. I wonder if it is DiskWarrior what they use at the Apple store to test the hardware. When I took mine there, the guy showed me that the memory was faulty--because it was cheap memory, ahem.

So, I don't know. My computer underwent surgery 18 months ago because they had to change some components whose names escape me at the moment because they were about to blow up. After that repair, it worked well...So, I don't know what the problem might be.

Good luck to us!

Thanks Miriam - I tried that. After reading everything I can find on the Internet and in here, I have done all of the following, with no success: Reset the SMU, Reset the PRAM (which on my iMac G5 only makes TWO bongs when it starts up, unlike the three that we are all used to...found this fact on an obscure Apple document), Used Tiger Startup Disk to repair all permissions and verify the disk, which at first appeared to fix the problem. The computer worked exactly twice correctly. Then it went back to its current antic. I also opened it up, as suggested by one online suggestion, and blew the dust out of it. I also deleted the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file and restarted. No luck with any of these efforts. I am waiting for my CD of Disk Warrior to show up. Unfortunately, it takes about two to three weeks to arrive. Somehow, I do not think that it will fix the problem. It's gotta be something else. I also disconnected all USB items that are not in use, though I don't know why this should matter. The computer worked fine with everything connected up until very recently. This is so darned frustrating!!! I'm still searching for a definitive answer. By the way, everyone keeps mention "overheating". Does anybody know what the temperature Celsius or Fahrenheit at normal is? I have iStatPro that gives me drive and processor temps. But I have no idea what the benchmarks are. Same thing with the drive speeds..... I thought that Macs were so darned user friendly. This is pretty discouraging.....

Hi Again....

Right now....The CPU is at 146F, The Hard Drive is at 122F, The HD: Macintosh is at 126F. The CPU sometimes goes up to 165F but the RPM of the fans go up and that's if I've got a lot of memory intensive applications or videos running.

I checked the iMac G5 Repair Extension program and while I do not exhibit the exact symptoms that they describe, this is a power issue and my serial number falls within the range of computers covered. Unfortunately, I am over the three year period as this was purchased in January 2005. I just want to rule out everything that I can before I take it to an Apple Repair Shop. I just don't want it to completely die on me one day. Have backed everything up on a regular basis just in case....

Thanks again for any insights that you might be able to provide....I'm running out of ideas....

Not waking from sleep was the first symptom that I had as my G5 2nd gen iMac started to fail. It at the Apple Store right now, anticipating a new motherboard if we can figure out who is going to pay for it (AppleCare, Apple Corp, or me).

DiskWarrior, Tech Tools Pro 4, and Disk Utility did nothing to rescue this machine. I also got different S.M.A.R.T. status reports from the different software which I found curious.
