Crossfades? Shouldn't This Be Easy?

I'm probably doing something wrong... all I want to do is crossfade audio segments (ones I've moved slightly to tighten up the mix)... shouldn't I just be able to select the segments and hit 'crossfade' or something like that? How do you do this?

In the top right corner of the arrange window, next to the 'snap' and 'drag' drop down menus, are the tool menus for your left click and right click. Simply select the crossfade tool, and click-drag over two regions to create a crossfade, or click-drag over the end of a region to create a fade in or fade out. Check out pg 34-35 of the Logic Pro 8 Getting Started manual.

This is pretty basic stuff, I suggest you read over the whole Getting Started manual, as it will give you a lot of information on how to navigate around Logic.

Good Luck!

Thanks a lot for your quick and detailed response... unfortunately I tried that already and it doesn't work. I've used Cubase, Nuendo, and Pro Tools extensively and figured this should be a pretty easy thing to do in Logic... dunno why it isn't working... again, I've cut up a bass recording in about 10 places and moved the new segments slightly to tighten the mix.. this has created overlaps and gaps... of course there are now pops and clicks... so i need to crossfade these out.... when i select the crossfade tool and select two segments to put in a crossfade, nothing happens. do i need to do this in the sample editor? i'd rather do it in the arrange window... nuendo was great.. i could select the whole track full of cuts and hit 'crossfade' and it did them all at once...

get rid of the overlaps for the crossfade.
the gaps will have to be an indy fade ins and outs per segment unless you can extend both points of the cut to meet.
you'll have to click and drag the cf tool over the edits for the sie of the fade or crossfade.
you can also use the window on the upper left and drag the arrow up or down on the fade in and fade out on the selected non connected segments.

It IS an easy thing to do in Logic.

If it is an Apple Loop, you can't apply fades, as stated by Juhani, but if it is a compressed file like an MP3 or AAC it also cannot be faded. It needs to be an uncompressed AIFF or WAV.

If you're trying to fade compressed files or Apple Loops, go to the Audio Bin, select all of the files in question (you can do a bunch at one time, just highlight them all), and then select 'Copy/Convert files...' from the Audio File menu at the top of the Bin. Select AIFF as the file type, and tick the box that says 'Change file reference in Bin' and it should convert all of the audio files. Your clips and editing that you did in the Arrange window will remain the same, but now you will be able to fade them.

Select the fade tool, and click and drag across the intersection between the two clips. You can make the crossfade bigger or smaller by how far into each segment you drag.

Good Luck!

hi, im assuming youre talking about apple F or F in PTs or X in cubase? if so, its not as simple or intuitive in logic, but possible.

select all of the reions youre wanting to xfade and in the top left of your 'inspector' there is a line titled 'fade' there you can select 'X' for crossfade and then a little to the right of it, you can either enter a value for the xfade or just click hold and drag your cursor up or down to set the value. ive yet to see if this is 'key commandable' or not like PTs or cubase cause it frustrates the life out of me, flow killer

is that what you were looking for??

thanks for all the answers... weird really.. it still doesn't work... but in another project it does... the only difference between the two projects is i have multiple takes for the bass part i'm trying to crossfade on one track - crossfading doesn't work on that track... the other project bass line only has one take - that's the one where i can crossfade....
