Unfortunately, the article appears to be out of date and inexact. It states, "A solid rectangle indicates the iPhone has access to a data connection over a GSM network using GPRS technology," but now (firmware 1.1.4) there appears to be the letter "G" displayed within a rectangle for a basic GPRS connection, just as "E" is displayed for an EDGE connection.

I've never seen or heard of anything other than the blank box, or the E. Has your phone been modified, putting you on a network other than the locked network for the phone? That could explain something.

That could explain some. I guess you may need to ask the carrier there. I believe it is Orange. If you have one of the legally unlocked phones something in the unlock could have modified things. Maybe someone else that is using the iPhone in France could answer this.

The network is 3G. There are "pockets" where only GPRS is offered, and other pockets where EDGE is offered. That is how I understand it.

Well, I've not seen it in the US, and I'm not sure where the OP is located, it doesn't say in his profile. If both of you are in France, that could explain why you are seeing it.
