Blinking question mark folder and no HD?

My macbook froze today and I had to restart. When I did so I got the blinking folder with a question mark.

So I put in my installer disk and it shows my dvd but no hard drive. I'm in disc utility but with no hd recognized is there anything I can do?

macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.1)

I have the same issue, it froze, I restarted and then i got the blinking question mark, or the circle with the line throuhg it. it let me run the disk utility program once.

and it said:

Verifying volume "MAC"
Error: The Underlying Task reported failure on exit

1 non HFS volume checked
volume needs repair.

I tried it again and the computer did not recognize the hard drive at all.

I got a Mac so I wouldn't have to deal with all of this, I am luckily still under warranty but nearest Apple Store is 100 miles North through speedtraps or 120 Miles South in Orlando.

Not Cool!

The genius bar "genius" got my computer and had to send it out to wherever the send these things, i am without computer for 5-7 days, and i do not live where near a service place, they will not send my computer to my home, which means i have to drive back and get it. i do not understand why they do not have things like hard drives in there stock at the store...
