By the master, I'm assuming you mean your output channel. You automate plugins there the same way you do on your instrument tracks.

First, make sure that your output has a track on the Arrange page (selecting read, touch, latch or write on the little box directly above the fader - it'll say 'off' until you do - will automatically create a track on the arrange page if one wasn't already there.)

Once you've got a track on the Arrange page select touch or latch and hit the play button. Then you can play around with the plugin's parameters and your actions will be recorded and automated.

Alternatively, open the automation on your Arrange page (pressing 'A' is the key command on my machine and then 'Z' to zoom in) select 'read' and then write in the automation.

I am guessing that you have encountered the problem that many discovered in Logic 8 that it does not automatically show a "Master" track in the arrange page, so there is no track lane to automate things.

However, are you talking about the master output, which is simply the master volume coming out of your system, or the Stereo Output, labeled "Output 1-2" where all of your tracks are feeding, which is your "Master Mix Bus"?

Either way, you do the following:

1. Create a new track (either audio or software type - it doesn't matter because you will be reassigning it in the next step)

2. "control-click" on the track header in the arrange page and a menu will appear which includes "reassign track objects".

You want to select

reassign track objects>mixer>output stereo

or

reassign track objects>mixer>other>master

If you want to automate your mix, you will want to select the output stereo option, otherwise you are just automating the volume coming out of your speakers/headphones.

that's the way I do it, other logic gurus probably may know an easier solution.

I am by no means a guru, but there is an easier way to get a channel strip to show up in the arrange page. Just go to the mixer, highlight the CS, and under the Options drop down menu (the one on the mixer, not the one in the main Logic toolbar), and select Create Arrange Tracks for Selected Channel Strips.

Sorry for not having looked at the manual prior to this post. I have noticed when doing automation with the Arturia instruments (like Minimoog), I have to pick the parameter I want to automate (like filter cutoff), I can't just randomly twist knobs (I think this is in session view?). Is that different if automating out of the channel strip?
My question is about Stylus RMX. I have not been able to find the parameters in the mixer, etc. How do you automate Stylus without using MIDI learn?
