TM is not backing up and I cannot get to previously backed yo stuff (it worked before). I use TC to back up. The 'connecting to back up volume' stays on forever. When I delve deeper it says "disk image failed to mount"
Whilst it works in 7.3 I now have the problem again that it doesn't spin down. It was nice and quiet but unuseable on 7.3.1, and works on 7.3 but is so noisy it is unuseable again....
I will have to get in touch with Apple as this is getting silly...
I have two iMac 2ghz Core 2 Duos with 1mb RAM as well as the 1.66ghz intel Core Duo mini connected to my 500gb TC, which is also serving as an airport base station.
One of the iMacs alternates between the 'The storage location for Time Machine backups can't be found." and "Time Machine Error - The backup disk image could not be mounted." though it connects without issue to the internet.
The other iMac and the mini both work great with the TC, connecting to the internet and backing up regularly.
I tried to back the firmware back to 7.3, both of the 'working' computers continued to be connected to the internet and backed up. The non-Time Machine iMac still did not allow connection to or backing up to the TC.
I re-updated the firmware to 7.3.1 and the three retained the same connectivity. So for me, the experiment to downgrade the firmware did not work.
just upgraded back to 731 and the discs and fan immediately spun down. Well after a reasonable amount of time of inactivity on the discs. And the backup still works as well.
Strange how the downgrade works for some butnot others.
Open AirPort utility - Select Manual Setup - On the summary screen hover the mouse pointer over version and you see an arrow appear then click it - A dialog window will apear and select 7.3 from the screen...
Remind me -- about how is it that Time Machine is supposed to provide backups automatically in the background without a hitch . . .
That's an enormous amount of work for an "automatic" backup you're describing there. I could have just used SuperDuper.
(I'm encountering the "disk image won't mount" message -- only three weeks after buying Time Machine.) If I go through what you describe, what guarantee do I have that Time Machine will operate fine the second time around?
I had the same problem and found out how to fix it 🙂
You can check the whole process here in a post I wrote for the Hardmac blog (it's rather long...):

I'm still on version 7.3 but upgraded to 10.5.3. The back up still works. Anybody on version 7.3.1. and 10.5.3. and a working back up?
Mine is on 7.3.1 since released, working just fine.
10.5.3 didn' t change the situation
