MacBook Pro Blank Screen (Built - in & External)

Let me explain the setup first. 95% of the time, my MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Santa Rosa) is running lid closed connected to an external 20" Cinema Display, keyboard and mouse. Normally, the laptop will go to sleep after 5 minutes of inactivity, noted by the glowing light on the latch.

I restarted my MBP last night, and it proceeded to go through the shut down process and restart. The starting chime can be heard, but there was no image on the monitor, just black. I opened the lid to start troubleshooting the issue. Blank screen on the MBP as well. I held the power button down and forced another restart, to no effect. Still a blank screen. I disconnected everything from the MBP and tried again. Still a blank screen. I've reset the PRAM, and also the Power Management setting. Still not working.

From as best I can tell, the MBP is booting up with no problem, I just have a black screen, so the computer is currently unable to be used in any capacity. I let the computer start up, and run for several minutes. I then sent the keyboard command to log off, and I could hear the computer activity increase.

I have not installed anything recently, I did note that there was a firmware release yesterday, but I've yet to install it.

One thing to note is that the light on the latch is very bright when the lid is closed, but grows much dimmer when the lid is opened. Maybe I haven't noticed this before, but it struck me as unusual.

So how have Apple "act as they hate" you, in particular, Flavio?

so far your total contribution here seems to have been:

"I switched from PC to this MBP. I'm feeling so shame.. "

"Same BSoD (Black Screen of Death) here. My GPU died today."

"Didn´t work for me. "

and

"Why Apple act as they hate us? "

Given that we have no idea what your actual problem is, no idea what you have actually tried to fix whatever it may be, and no idea why you , for some completely bizarre reason, "feel shame", it is very hard indeed to tell if, let alone "why", Apple might ,or might not "hate" you!

As this seems to be the sum total of your posts here it is pretty hard to work out what particular Apple "act" you are upset about and what it is in this "act" that makes you think that a multinational company is likely to respond to you (and whoever else you mean by "us") in such an emotional fashion!

still usable in target mode but with un-fixable errors

Sounds as if you have serious HD corruption Matteo. Do an erase and install or at the very least run a "heavy duty" disk repair utility. There is no reason to connect unfixable HD errors of the type you mention with a failed video card. I'd suggest you try to get this ironed out before assuming you have a graphics card problem.

I'm suddenly unable to start my MacBook Pro as well -- with it powering on, but hanging on a black screen. I don't hear a start-up chime either. The only way I can start up is by removing the battery and resetting the SMC.

Today I had to do a hard reset of my Macbook Pro as it had become unresponsive. When I tried to start it back up, the power would come on and I could hear the fans beginning to spin, but there was no start-up chime and the screen remained black. The power light stayed on steadily, but looked to be half-lit. I tried to power off and on a few more times to no avail.

Finally I had to remove the battery to perform an SMC reset. After this, I was finally able to start up the computer.

But now, every time I try to restart, I always get the black screen and no start-up chime. I'm having to resort to removing the battery and resetting the SMC to even get it to boot up.

I have tried zapping the PRAM, running Disk Warrior, running TechTool, repairing permissions, clearing user caches, all to no avail.

I was able to backup my files using a USB drive, thankfully... but I also noticed that I was now no longer able to connect my Firewire drives to either the FW400 or FW800 ports. The devices indicate that they are receiving power, but they simply do not mount, nor do they appear in the Disk Utility.

I have a Genius appointment later today thankfully and am under AppleCare. Does anybody have any speculation about what the problem could be?

Thanks!

Mine hasn't died yet. Bought it the day the SR chipset came out. I'm following this thread with great interest because this thing is real. People, Rod is the troll here. Ignore him. Move along. Keep this thread on topic. There are no conspiracies nor is Apple out to get us. If you have a MBP SR chipset with the Nvidia GPU in question, turn on screen sharing. You may need it. Unless your GPU is reported as an X3100 via System Profiler, you don't have the Nvidia problem.

Add one more user with black screen of death and flippant response from Apple.

Macbook Pro 17" purchased in June 07. Runs hot and dies in October 07. Logic board is replaced under warranty.

Runs fine until last week black screen of death. Apple care rep says that these are isolated incidents and I must shell out a grand for replacement motherboard.

This is clearly a manufacturing defect. The lifespan of the logic board seems to be less than a year.

Is our only option legal action ? Longtime Apple user (2+ decades) feeling irked I shelled out $3.3k for a LEMON.
