Logitech 250 USB headset - mic working but not headphones

Just purchased a Logitech 205 USB headset to use with my PowerBook. When I set my sound prefs in System Prefs to Output>Logitech USB headset/Input>Logitech USB headset and plug the headset into the USB port, however, I can record with the mic, but the headphones do not seem to be detected. With certain progams I'm getting a message saying that "the output device is not detected."

What coule be the problem?

I have the same problem with Logitech 350 USB Headset since I upgraded to Tiger last weekend.
I could hear sound on the headphones for a moment after I plugged in the USB headset. Then it would as if stifle itself and there would be no sound in the headset. The mic was working but I couldn't hear the people I called on Skype as plugging in the USB had cut off the speakers and the headphones were not working. They could hear me fine. The settings in System Preferences were correct.
Toggling mute on and off from the keyboard has worked several times in a row. Thanks for that suggestion.
I hope it lasts as I have to travel next week and call back with Skype.
Would be great to have someone guess at what might be the issue.

Thanks for the update Graham.

Do you know I can't remember the last time I contacted a company's support line / page / email and actually got a response that fixed the problem, instead of standard answers that most users would have already done before getting in touch...most of them are really just paying lip service to the idea of support.

That said, nearly every question that I've asked on these boards has been answered and problem solved, so I'm living in hope, as this one's got me really stumped!!

Hi

In the case of Skype it has its own Preferences for input & output device, and this seems to work independently of the device chosen in System Preferences.

Headset users might find a menu bar audio input & output switcher useful: I do

Otherwise, I've had no problems at all with my Logitech 350 Headset.

I just got a Logitech 250 USB headset today, and had a similar problem -- the headphones worked at first, but as soon as I tried using the microphone, the headphones stopped working. I was even able to reproduce it exactly on my other Mac, and surprisingly, neither rebooting nor unplugging the device and plugging it back in helped.

Logitech support was useless, though they did say they'd report the problem to their engineers.

Thanks to this discussion thread, I was able to resolve the problem by checking and unchecking the "mute" button, and get back to enjoying the Rosetta Stone language learning software. It's a pretty annoying issue, though!
