Problems with Edge

I get the "cannot activate EDGE" message occasionally, but more often it's as if I can't resolve names. I'll have 3-4 bars and the E icon, but Safari tells me it can't access sites. When this happens, it happens for all sites, and I think an EDGE problem is more likely than google, my university, and apple.com all going down simultaneously. Toggling Airplane mode doesn't fix it. Short of rebooting the phone, is there a way to reset the IP stack?

First, try turning on Airplane mode for a few seconds.

If that doesn't fix it try rebooting the phone - hold HOME and SLEEP buttons for about 8 seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Ignore the "Slide to turn off" screen and keep holding.

If that fails call AT&T and see if they have a temporary EDGE outage.

Rebooting does not reset the IP stack. Rebooting is a routine process that just takes a few seconds and doesn't lose any data. Is there a reason you don't want to do this?

To reset the IP stack go to Settings/General/Reset/Reset Network Settings

I get this probem too. I need to reboot or reset Network settings to fix it.
The error says Safari Cant open the page because it can't connect to server.
The edge icon appears but data doesnt seem to flow.
If i connect to Wifi It seems to resolve the problem or if i just reboot it works fine.

getting this issue on 2 iphones yesterday & today

Try every thing listed above, and if that doesn't fix it call AT&T. Might be a local outage (it happens).

I'm in Portland, Or and I'm having the same exact issue. I've had my phone for about a month now and last night at home, it wouldn't connect. I spent about an hour and a half on the phone with AT&T and an Apple Tech (conference call). They had me try everything under the sun...turn it off then on again. Reset it. Turn Airplane mode on then off. Everything they had me try didn't work.

So this morning, I get up and it's still not working. When I got to work, I decided to try a reset again. WOAH!!! It worked all day........untill I got home. BAM!!! "Could not connect to server". WiFi works just fine. But I just want to know why EDGE is suddenly not working. It worked fine before when I was at home!!!

The tech at AT&T wrote a case for me and said that someone should be getting back to me by the 17th with a resolution.

I also asked if there was an outage in my area and he said that there wasn't. Oh well. Guess I'll have to wait untill the 17th...

I faced the problem today again........safgari cant open page coz cant connect to server. My friends iphone worked just fine.
I was so livid...coz mine was a new one and his a refurbished one....****....but as i came out of the restaurant it picked it up again.
Now its working fine. I am gonna take a video next time and putit on youtube i guess.....this is the third iphone i am on since i bought it 2 mnths back.
I might try to restore to factory settings and then update it to 1.1.4 again i guess.

i get the exact same problem, it usually works when at home just fine...whenever im at my work place (full bars, E) it wont connect...the switching on airplane mode fixes the issues but i dont like having to do that every single time...i shouldnt have to. Do you think we have a faulty device?

I don't think you have a faulty device. If toggling airplane mode (which forces the phone to re-register with the network) fixes the problem it is a quirk of the network. The network has not recognized that you have moved since the last connection. It might also fix itself if you wait a few minutes.

thanks for the reply. It is just weird how i never had this issue before, and all of a sudden it started. I guess ill just keep switching to airplane mode and back whenever i have the issue

ok for example ive been in the same spot at my desk for about 2 hours now and ive had to do the airplane thing 5 times already...all im doign is listening to the ipod and then i check my email and nothing.

I'm having the same problem ... over the last 4-5 days I've had to constantly power on and off or switch the airplane mode on and off, otherwise I have no internet or email capability. This is a new problem - I've had the phone since they came out last year and I don't recall having to do this more than 2-3 times in total over the previous months. Now it's 2-3 times per day, at least. (FYI ... I'm in Michigan (if we assume it's a Edge issue))
