get info...calculating size... forever!!!

often, and i mean often, when trying to find out the size of a particular folder, the info window says "calculating size". and says that forever.
close the window, reopen it, still calculating. 10 minutes later, still calculating. reset finder. no dice.
anyone know about this?
another scenario has it showing an old size. for instance 9 gigs. put 2 gigs of stuff in it, still 9 gigs. reset finder... calculating size. ugh!
please help.

thanks for the response.
if it's a messed up HD how can i find out? everything else works fine. never had a freeze up, don't have any other problems with the finder or any of my apps. same question goes for the messed up install. i do regular permissions repairs and system updates. i've got plenty of free HD space (about 40-50 gigs).
as far as a 3rd party app or kext trying to load, how can i diagnose that and resolve it?
