Any alternative to Stuffit Expander?

I have given up on Stuffit Expander. I have tried installing it time and time again and it installs but quits every time I try to open it anything with it.
Is there any other kind of free software I can try as I have a load of .rar files I really need to open.
Any suggestions welcome.

Helen,
Not a direct answer to your question, but Stuffit Expander crashing did ring a bell. I turned up Stuffit Expander FAQ from Allume's site that may help you.

If that link doesn't get you the exact FAQ, you can go to the general support page at <http://support.allume.com/techsupport/index.php>. The FAQ is listed in the green box on the right hand side.

Sorry, I don't mean to step in on Loren's help, but the download of MacPar deluxe is a .sit file. You need Stuffit Expander to open it. I see a never ending circle here.

The command line tool unrar that I mentioned comes in a .tgz file. This can be opened by Stuffit Expander OR using the Terminal command:
tar -xzvf <path to the file>

You can simply drag and drop the download to the Terminal window to get the "path to the file". The .tgz file will then be uncompressed and placed at the root of your Home directory.

Helen,

Catch 22, I fear. Your MacPAR download is compressed, and you need Stuffit Expander to decompress it.

Get Stuffit 8.02 PLUS THE 12/15/2003 UPDATE (15 day free trial) at http://www.download.com/ (search for "Stuffit 8"). Stuffit 8.0 will download uncompressed, so you can install it on your computer. Use the update, then use 8.02 do decompress MacRAR.

I have Mac OS X (10.4.3) and just reconfirmed all of the above. Works fine. Good luck.

I bumped into this thread as I was looking for a solution for my seemingly broken Stuffit Exp 10 which, as of today, packed in.

So, do I gather from all your posts that Stuffit and Tiger 10.4.2 don't go together anymore? Are we waiting for a fix from Allume? Or is my (and apparently all these other people's) problem just sporadic, not affecting every Tiger machine?

Alex,

Stuffit 10.0 has worked fine on both OS X 10.3 and 10.4.x (currently running 10.4.3) on my computer, with no problems. Methinks Helen has an isolated problem - perhaps some software/preferences conflicts - whereby it doesn't work on her machine until her problem is fixed.

In the meantime, I have found Stuffit 8.02 (with 12/15/03 update) to be the salvation whenever Stuffit 9 or 10 doesn't work for whatever reason.

I haven't checked out the FAQ solution yet over at Allume's site, but here's what happens with me (and, yes, my IPv6 is set to Automatically for all Network configurations in the current location - AirPort, Ethernet, FWTM, Internal modem, and Bluetooth):

I double click a .rar file. Stuffit Expander 10 fires up, the progress bars start filling for each of the extracted files as if they are actually being built from the .rar archive, then after the last one Stuffit quits and occasionally informs me that "An error occured during the Stuff [???] operation. Error #-37" (BTW, I am trying to UNstuff, not stuff things...) But, then again, sometimes I get no message whatsoever.

In any case, after Stuffit has quit, I end up with no extracted files. Just the original .rar. Bum!

Things used to work alright until yesterday. Haven't changed anything since yesterday. Only downloaded the latest Onyx and run the Automator to empty some system caches and repair permissions. About a month ago I was puzzled as Stuffit 9.0.1 kept informing me that there was the 9.0.2 update which I downloaded, ran and then saw that Stuffit kept informing me that there was the erm... 9.0.2 update and did I want to download it? Oh, and it still reported itself as 9.0.1 even though the 9.0.2 updater had been properly installed. But then, EXP10 came out and I installed it next to the v9 folder which includes DropStuff. That's all. A bit of a palaver, really.
