Any alternative to Stuffit Expander?

1. Stuffit Expander 10.x crashes if IPv6 is off.
2. Sfuffit Expander 10.x does not crash if IPv6 is set to Automatic but it does not unzip/untar files properly.
3. Stuffit Standard 9.0 works, better to stick with it for now.

So, where can one download version 7 or 8 of Stuffit? If I try from Allume, it only offers version 10. Ditto for VersionTracker, even after I have clicked on the drop down menu and selected a past version: it still brings me to the Allume site for v10.

You have received lots of suggestions. However, I think the primary cause of Stuffit crashes on launch is that it attempts to check a web site for newer versions. What you need to do is disable this feature. Disconnect from the network (or turn off Airport) and then launch Stuffit Expander (or whatever Stuffit product is giving you trouble). In the Preferences for Expander, locate the option to allow version checking and uncheck it. Problem solved.

If you have Panther install disks you can find the StuffitExpander.pkg there, it is on Disk 2. You can just copy the pkg file off the disk and install. It is version 7.0.3.

Please is there an alternate application or not. I have also had a never ending cycle of problems with Stuffit on two Macs running Tiger. I just want something else for .sit files.

P.S. I really don't really long work around to make stuffit work I want something else. Is there anything that actually works.

As far as I know, you must have Stuffit Deluxe or Stuffit Expander installed to be able to unstuff .sit and .sitx archives. In the long run, more developers will likely switch to disk image (.dmg) files to distribute software. I have used Stuffit for over a decade on OS 9 and X without any problems (other than the version checking problem mentioned above).

Stuffit Expander 9.0.1 works flawlessly for me. I use Get Info and change the 'Open with' to Stuffit Expander, then, Change all.. You can trash the prefs file and restart the app: User/Library/Preferences/com.stuffit.Expander.plist.

I have now downloaded Stuffit 8.0.2 and it seems to be working. Time to leave bad experiences behind and move on. I just hope people move to a more compatible format in the future. For any distributor to use a format that is 100% reliant on one third party application is insane.

BTW I couldn't even install Stuffit 10 it just got 80% through and failed with an error 'file not found'.
