Unfortunately, the term "Finder" seems to be hard coded into the Dock... but you can still change what Finder appears like in other places. To change the name of any application, find the application in the Finder (or whatever else you want to call it), right click and choose "Show Package Contents". Navigate through Contents » Resources » English.lproj and open "InfoPlist.strings". Change the application name to suit your taste. Save somewhere safe, and
copy to the original location. Keep the backup. Then relaunch Finder using
killall Finder. Alternatively, entering
defaults write com.apple.finder QuitMenuItem 1 in the Terminal will allow you to quit the Finder using command-Q.
Of course, you can modify any .strings file, which allows you to change the text for almost anything. But also note that removing a double quote could make the application/OS unuseable.
Absolutely. I'm betting though that once most, (not all), people have modded a system and it's been working OK for a while. If they do get some issue with something they either forget what they did to make the change or can't find the back up file.
Now your abosolutely sure about finder right? I can change the icon after all. I followed the posted instructions and managed to change the sys pref icon name fine but the downloads folder does not have a Package Contents option and I am at a loss as to how to change it.. any guidance please
