I would like to change the name of the Trash, I do not know if this will cause it problems or if it can be done...

Live with it - you are just looking to have problems

System files and application files should be left as they are where they are

I thought that might be the case, its only when I stumbled upon the recycle mobius loop char in miscellaneous symbols that I had ideas on changing it.

Copy /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/InfoPlis t.strings to any folder.
Open it in any text editor.
Change "Trash" on the first line to suit your needs.
    Save.
Copy the backup to it's original location. Keep the backup as you will need to replace the file in English.lproj after some software updates.
Open the Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app) and type killall Dock

there's no way I'm typing that lot. Even if it does what I want I should think its surroupticious "killall" ~thanks but no thanks

what about copy and paste? is that too hard?

lol. All "killall Dock" does is restart Dock. You can log out/in if you are so afraid of it.

What you want can only be accomplished by the kind of a harmless hack semicolons suggests.

all killall Dock does is refresh the dock.

And btw, you are being kind of a jerk. He answered your question, and you answered with a "nice answer, but i don't want to try it, looks like too much work".

By the way, this is simply a more specific example of what I said (and Rob heavily edited) [here|http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080308075639201&query=defa ult%2Btext].
If you find my wording confusing (I know I'm not great at user-friendly writing), look at that article, it's much more understandable.

Okay, well lets say that I do that but won't OS X get confused when I send stuff to the bin? Is it a fullproof, I know nothing is, but I don't want any internal errors an the like.

Steve a stewart - don't post again, thank you.

No. OS X will refer to the actual folder ("~/.Trash"), not what it appears to be called. Simply changing your language would change the name of the Trash that appears in the Dock. It is perfectly harmless to edit strings files, although (as noted in the above link) software updates may change it back. It is foolproof, but not 100% future-proof.
I didn't mention it above, but after doing this you should run Repair Permissions, just to make OS X think everything is OK.

I did a spotlight search for repair permissions and got nothing back, bear with me

Open Disk Utility, click on your hard drive, and click "Repair Permissions" in the "First Aid" tab.

Thanks, it worked like you said! Do you know how to change the name of the Finder icon as well as System Preferences? oh and the Download folder ..in fact everything one's not supposed to tamper with.

I can guess that it would be along the same route and I might be able to work it out but there's nothing like the right way first time is there...

Ha ha Steve a stewart. That was my first take on it too.

But seriously, Hamper, change some of the things sure but do strongly bear in mind what was said by LarryHN in his first post. That is some good advice there.

I never listen to advice like that. I changed the trash name so whats wrong with changing other names, isn't it just a name not the actual link name?
