Software Update error -1001

Hello,

I am having a problem as Software update shows the following error:

A networking error has occurred: timed out (-1001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again.

Here is the console log:

My internet is working fine. I have tried trashing prefs, turning ethernet port on/off. I was using Airport connect to a Linksys wireless gateway WAG54G. I then solely used ethernet and it still wouldn't work. I have since manually downloaded 10.4.3 and Software Update still won't work. I really don't know what to do next. I know that I can just go and manually download the needed updates and forget about SU but it's just so useful and I don't want to give it up. Please help.

I got nailed by the -1001 “timed out” error today after upgrading two computers from 10.3.7 to 10.4.3 and then running Software Update (SWUP). As noted, SWUP worked on the first computer right after the upgrade, but not since. Below are my unsuccessful stabs at a cure. Both systems are on a wired LAN via a Xsense XRouter Pro MIH-130A and connected to cable broadband by a Motorola SB4200 SURFboard cable modem.

01) Ran Network Diagnostics from error dialog box – Checked OK.
02) Logged in via Clean Administer account and attempted SWUP.
03) Per AppleCare CSR: reinstalled OS 10.4.3 (Erase & Install) on eMac. Got a case number. They closed right after my call, so hadn’t recalled to escalate the call up the chain.
04) Attempted to use SWUP on 2 systems: G4 MDD Dual 867 & eMac USB 2.0 both OS 10.4.3.
05) On G4 MDD system: Booted into old System (10.3.7) on dedicated hard drive. Got same error.
06) Completely reset broadband cable connection-powered down and unplugged all connectors for 10 minutes.
12) Deleted both Library/cache folders and rebooted.
13) Deleted SWUP.plist files and rebooted.
14) Used Networks Prefs pane to only have “Built-in Ethernet” port active.
15) iPhoto successfully updated via its internal “Check for Updates” function.
16) MS Office 2004 performed multiple updates via its internal function.
17) Successfully installed manual updates (DL’ed from Apple Web site and ran installers).
18) Note: Just 2 hours earlier I had used SWUP on the G4 MDD after 10.4.3 Upgrade to update the install. Worked fine.
19) Repair Permissions and Repair Disk are always run before and after Updates.

Maybe something here will help someone come to our rescue.

Try it again. If it was a server problem (and I think it was), it seems to have been fixed in the last few minutes....

When Software Update runs normally, /var/log/install.log may report the following messages or something similar. Here, the Apple's server was synchronized with my client node at Dec 25 16:48:28 (JST: +9 GMT) and Dec 25 15:46:07 for each several minutes. Thus, this proves that the Apple server has been in a maintenance mode.

Thanks for letting us know. Worked on all my machines that can run Tiger. Good thing too considering we got my sister a Powerbook for Christmas and she's going back to Maryland Tuesday. That machine had the same problem but now it's fixed.
