Verifying iPhone software...

I plugged my iphone into my mac to sync and had a message about software update, I clicked ok and a whole process started...fine...but now all I have is a message saying 'verifying new software' and nothing is happening! Has anyone had this? Are there any solutions?

Thanks

Yeah I'm having the same problem my iphone was stuck on the apple logo then i finally found a way to get it to at least connect to itunes but now when it gets to the end of the restore and goes to verify the software the phone goes to the itunes logo and the cable and just sits there until the phone turns itself off and itunes stays frozen. I've tried everything i can think of i have had 5 or 6 replacement iphones and the last time i went in they told me it was my itunes and that all i had to do was reinstall it but that hasnt worked tried all of my usb ports. I really need some help i work offshore for a month at a time and cant get to apple store. Please someone any advice at all would be appreciated

Same here. This same issue happened on the last update and I took it into the Apple store to use a MAC to restore then went back home to backup my info. I was lucky that the Genius rep was able to borrow a MAC without having to make me set up an appointment for a later date. However, this time, the store was too full and I had to make an appointment for later this week. I'm without a phone for 3 days becuase the upgrade didnt work and Apple will only fix it with an appointment at their Genius bar. Thats Genius!I even told them that the last time it took 20 minutes to update the software at the store and that would fix the problem. They still asked me to make an appointment and be without service during the weekend when I need my phone most. I'm using XP and was going back today to buy a PRO but it looks like some MAC users are having the same issues. Hmm. I hope someone from Apple finally responds to this.

Hi,

I had the same problem on my Touch. Purchased the upgrade, went to install, came up with verify for about 2 hours, thought it had crashed, so rebooted. Then had to restore Touch from scratch (painful), but still held on on the Verify pop up.

Similar to what other people have said on here, I had to install itunes on another computer, then run the restore. This also entailed copying music over etc etc, a lot of down time which I did not appreciate from Apple.

Seems to be a common issue this, please can Apple fix and advise on this forum?

Thank you..

Anyone going to get the new thin TOuch?! Hope it comes with up to date software ; )

Mine too. iPhone 3G only comes up in Recovery Mode now.

Took ~1 minute for Extracting Software (while showing "connect to iTunes logo" on iPhone 3G)
~1 minute for Preparing iPhone for restore (while showing "apple logo" on iPhone and iTunes progress bar counting up to 100%.
Another ~2 mins for Preparing iPhone for Restore (iTunes continually scrolling)
~2 mins for Restoring iPhone Software (displaying "connect to iTunes logo" on iPhone.
Then changes to Verifying iPhone Software. iPhone displayed Apple logo for a minute then switched to "connect to iTunes logo". Then stays there for 15-20 mins until the iPhone powers down - but iTunes continues to scroll away displaying "Verifying iPhone Software". It continues to scroll even after I disconnect the iPhone from USB.
Yes, I've rebooted - even cold booted.
Even entered Recovery Monday manually holding down the Home button after power up (and releasing the Sleep button).
Is it bricked now?

same here, tried to update to 2.1, got stuck on verifying software, after a few hours my phone bricked. uninstalled itunes on my PC, hooked my iphone to a MAC to restore (since the restore was also getting stuck on my PC). once it restored, and i DL itunes 8.0 again on my PC, my iphone was able to restore its backup. but as for now, no 2.1 for me... help.

A lot's been said on this but I'll put in my two bits .. today my Iphone began displaying 'No Service' in my typical strong service area .. rebooted, reset network settings, cleaned sim, etc. did not help the situation .. after talking to support and hard booting still nothing .. support said to upgrade to the 2.01 software which is supposed to fix the problem or they told me it's a known issue w/ 'bad antennae' and I would need a replacement at the store.

Needless to say, tried to upgrade the software, and like other people ended up w/ the "verifying software update" hang from ****. Phone locked up on the I'tune / cable image and subsequent tries at a "restore" are failing and hanging. Tried to restore at a fresh PC w/ a new I-tunes download and it recognizes the device as faulty and won't go any further. A whole day spent screwing around w/ this and now off to the store where I can probably wait for a back ordered phone.

Apple should at least address their consumer public on this as it is obviously a major flaw .. as others have said their is a high reliance on these phones, in my case a business reliance, and the communication from on high seems more concerned w/ rushing out to grab market share than ensuring that this great concept is bullet proofed (at least the basic functionality) before ensnaring customers in this type of headache.

I'm also quite disappointed that the I-tunes backup does not backup most of the content (photo's,addresses, etc.), I assumed that's what a backup is .. and w/ all these glorious features what's the point if you accumulate them and they are so vulnerable. I understand there are some backup apps out there .. but this should be a standard I-tunes feature. It just seems obvious.

I also feel that all I'm doing is playing IT guy here. The I-phone's main feature is ease of use .. I'm not computer illiterate but I shouldn't need to be a tech geek to operate my hand-held. I love the concept but the execution is letting me down.

Greetings,

No one from Apple will respond on these forums - it would be best for you to call Apple directly. I know of no one that had has had any issues with the update to 2.1. It takes a few minutes to do, maybe like 15 or so, I don't remember as I was doing other things as I was updating. Watching a firmware update is like watching paint dry or grass grow.

Once again, this is a User to User forum - no Apple folks will ever respond.

Cheers,
M.

Solution:

On a different computer device:

1) Download and install ITunes
2) Connect your iPhone
3) Complete a Restore of the iPhone by selecting Restore on the iPhone menu
4) Check the status of the iPhone - once the Restore is complete, the iPhone should be operational without your dat
5) Disconnect the iPhone
6) Go to the computer device where you originally had the issue
7) Bring up iTunes
8) Conduct a restore from Backup on the iPhone device menu (click on menu) - this will bring back your data

Please note that you do not need to have your iPhone reset at the Apple Store if this works and that setting up a separate user id on the same computer does not work if the iTunes application is available for all users on the device.

Hi,
I faced this issue twice. Since launch of iPhone 3G Apple pushed updates to their iPhone OS twice.
For the first update I followed the basic instructions to update, everything looked fine till this screen "Verifying iPhone software".. I waited, I waited, I waited, knew something is screwed up. I looked up online and realized I am not the only one having this problem, many suggested [including customer service] re-install itunes, use 2.0 USB but honestly nothing worked. I met this Apple genius who fixed in 5 minutes [all he did is updated on his machine]. End of story [at least till Apple release the next patch]

Now Apple releases the next patch, I was dead sure that it won't work again, apprehensive but since I was sick of dropped calls issue I applied the patch and guess what "Verifying iPhone software" again... 😟

I followed this suggestion of using a different machine and it works as magic.

Just go to another PC.
Install/Update iTune latest version
Plug in your screwed up iPhone
It will immediately prompt that restore/update had previously failed but follow "OK" [don't remember the exact button]
IPhone get activated
Now connect your iPhone to your original[issues] computer
Restore
Sync and all your data/apps will be back

Cheers!
Rohit

I would first like to say that I LOVE this phone. I am addicted to it.

BUT...........

For four days now I have been without. I have had this problem before and had to drive two hours each way to the nearest apple store only to watch them fix this problem in ten minutes. I have been trying this time on and off for four days. I don't know what to do. I have tried all of the steps I read here and uploaded new antivirus software etc to try to make sure my computer wasn't interfering. I have been working 10-12 hours a day, everyday at least through the first week of Jan and will not be able to travel AGAIN to the apple store. I was glad to find out this was not a solitary issue of mine and that others are also having this problem.. Please give any advice.... My twelve year old is sick of letting me use her phone (till I remind her I pay the bill).

Thanks>>>>>

It seems to me that iTunes added a new feature to counter against the custom firmware that some use in jailbreaking. I have an iPod 1G, which I've owned for over a year now. Until this latest firmware update, I've had no issues with updating or restoring. So, the implication remains that either there has been a new feature added in iTunes or the firmware itself to counteract iPod hackers. Here's what happens when I try to restoremy iPod:

(I already have the restore file downloaded.) I click on Restore in iTunes after I've plugged my iPod in. It connects to an iTunes server briefly. I proceed to attempt a restoration. The iPod essentially freezes after the restore status bar becomes full on its screen. Meanwhile, the restoration bars on the PC remain motionless. At this point, I give up. Every time. Nothing happens, so I have to quit.

So, I tried disabling my wireless Internet connection before I repeated restoring. Sure enough, iTunes prompts me after I hit Restore, telling me that it failed to contact a server, resulting in the inability to restore the device. Considering this, I connect to the Internet once more and click on Restore. It begins to restore the device as it has in the past. This time, I disconnect from the network again, but after the restore has initiated. Surprisingly, the process inches its way to sucess. I eventually reach a new stage, "Verifying iPod software." However, both the computer and iPod seem to freeze again at this point. If I let it run long enough, the iPod powers off.

So, I've confirmed this latest update involves a network connection. I'm guessing those that had success by trying a restore on another computer were all originally using using computers that did not have a direct Internet connection (a wire going straight from your computer to the wall). Upon connecting directly to the Internet, the problem seems to be resolved. But, for those of us that have only one computer, like me, it seems failure is the only option.
