Hope that helps...
I am amazed by what Grapher can do, but the available help files clearly only skim the surface. Does anyone know of a web site, book, etc. that really explains the ins and outs of the program

When searching the web, you might want to consider that "Grapher" is Apple's name for Arizona's "Curvus Pro". (It was purchased by Apple)

I have tried to find a Curvus Pro X manual, but no luck. Anyone out there know where we can get a Curvus Pro X manual???
Why don't you just email www.arizona-software.ch ?
They're extremely helpful, so maybe they could send you an old Curvus - Help Viewer file or pdf... or even an old demo version of curvus pro. The original manual is quite good.

And -of course- feel free to ask me anything specific.
OK. Any idea how to rename a point set once created? I end up with multipe "Untitled set" entries and am unable, apparently, to rename them.
Additional question: How to rename the axis variable(s)?
Any help is appreciated.
Cheers,
Matthew

In Curvus pro:
1. double click "untitled set" (in that list with all the functions in it)
2. double click the axis and you'll get a little info window popping up.
Looks like Apple has screwed it up in Grapher. Can't get it to work either. Send a bug report to apple. 🙂

apropos bug report...
try this: ctrl click on function (in the edit window), export as pdf, create new mail message, paste pdf using apple+v or edit->paste.
Works with Curvus, broken in Grapher...

Thanks, I'll file the bug. I seem to be encountering lots o' bugs to file this week.

Another one which was driving me nuts until I found a workaround...
Try renaming any finder item within a filevault account using automator. Impossible! (You'll get "error 1728". Helps a lot, doesn't it.)
Workaround: move file outside "filevault country", rename, move back in.
And automator is way to sllooooooooowwwwwwww!!! (Currently working on a PB 1.5 Ghz, 1GB Ram)
And btw... Looks like I'll stick with Curvus hehehe

Hi there, and please, accept my apologies in advance. I just found your knowledge about Grapher quite impresive (and the application iss wonderful) and, i wonder if you can point me to some manual of grapher, you know, it is a terrific app, but then, you want to do some simple things like graph the inverse of a function, and the help from apple isn't there.
Best regards

Well... sometimes you just gotta do it by trial and error...
There is some sort of inverse. inv(...) However, it doesn't work for a function. Spitting out some weird stuff.
Found out how to do it though:
define
f(x)=x^2+1
and
y=f(x) for the normal function and
x=f(y) for the inverse

looks like there'd be a market for "The missing manual for Grapher" hehehe
I find Grapher very useful and frustrating. I'm using it to make 3-d plots of real data. The plots are quite beautful, but the data is difficult to manage. I have 2 difficulties.
1. I can't find a way to name or rename the point sets or groups. Each is given the default name "untitled". This gets real confusing with about 30 point sets.
2. Printed output (or copied output) seems limited to screen resolution. Thus, the 3-d plots look a lot better on the screen than printed.
I've tried searching for cumulus pro documentation, to no avail. I did send an email to Arizona software and I'm hoping for a reply. But my guess is that the renaming problem was introduced in the transition to Grapher.
I hope Apple keeps developing Grapher. It seems like a great start, but rough around the edges. Also, the lack of a manual is frustrating. I love free software of this quality (well, not free; I paid of Tiger), but I'm hoping for more.

1. In Curvus, I can just double click the name "untitled" and rename it. Send bug reports to Apple.
2. Unfortunately, 3D output has always been limited to copy exactly what you see on screen. No scaling possible. 2D output as PDF works flawlessly though.

Me too, since Arizona is obviously not involved anymore.
I just can't figure out why Apple has added so many bugs. Basically, all they did was changing the white (What is it called? Aqua?) interface to brushed metal.
Curvus/Grapher has never been free. Edu-discount was about 25 US. Well worth it's money. Nice thing to see it integrated with Tiger though, assuming Apple will update it one day.

Hallo,
I wondered if anyone knows any similar applications, just a little bit more extend then Grapher. (I need better output for the 3d mathmodels).
bedankt, Timo
