How to limit domain and range in Grapher?

Hello,

I'm trying to do something fairly simple (I think). I want to inscribe the rays of the angles of the unit circle in the unit circle, using Grapher.

So, for the line pi/4, I enter the equation y=x. I then want to limit the line so it stays inside the circle, which would mean -sqrt(2)/2 <= x <= sqrt(2)/2. But, I can't find any mechanism to do that.

Is this possible, or do I need to use Photoshop to erase the excess lineage after the fact?

Thanks,
-Ryan

It isn't too difficult. Look up how to enter piecewise defined functions in the help. You will want to define a conditional with three conditions with the last condition leaving out the condition. E.G. if you are inputting your conditions all on the left side then the final condition would have a blank left side and 'x' in the right column. Since this forum will not let me attach a file I can not attach my example to this post. Below is the LaTeX for the equation, though. So, if you have a way to render that you can see it. I can also email you a copy if you would like.

y=\left\{\begin{array}{cc} x<\frac{-\sqrt{2}}{2} & 0 \\ x>\frac{\sqrt{2}}{2} & 0 \\ & x \end{array}\right

Hi Ryan, I'm not sure whether you are still seeking a solution, but I too wanted to restrict a domain between values and tried many combinations ( I didn't really understand James's solution). I finally stumbled across the correct syntax.

It is just an & (ampersand) ! The word "and" doesn't seem to work.

So if you want 2<x<4 then in the condition spot, use x>2 & x<4.
