Elgato EyeTV for DTT

Anyone tried EyeTV for DTT ? Mine arrived yesterday. Not very good at all.I`ll be sending it back.
I live in an area of Bristol UK with good reception (from both rooftop and portable antenna) However using Elgato EyeTV for DTT is really not happening.

Wondered if anyone has it working as it should?

Hi Jon,
The app itself looks very good and seems to be well thought out,and the definition and general picture quality is very good (when you can get a picture!) even in full screen mode , however (and I guess this depends on local reception) the picture is totally unwatchable due to constant breaking up and freezing.

Before buying EyeTV for DTT I checked my reception here , (for UK). No problems.
TV reception `round these parts is very good so I thought I`d be up and running in no time.
After installing soft/hardware and performing the autotune function (it tuned into all the available channels no problem) I hooked it up to my rooftop aerial expecting reasonable results. Not so . The picture hardly moved and cracked and popped.
EyeTV for DTT has a window for checking signal integrity. It showed signal strength topping out at 75% and signal quality 45%. When I plug the aerial back into the TV the picture is perfect.
Draw your own conclusion.
Short of buying a new rooftop aerial , I`m stumped.

it`s boxed ready for return at the moment but I will give it another try when I have time.Maybe it was freak atmospheric conditions or something.
Shame. I really like the look and idea of the product.

Hope this helps

I read that it came with its own aerial - did you try it with the aerial that came with it?

Your signal strength looks fine (my set-top box rarely gets over 75%) but the signal quality at 45% is too low I believe (less than 90% is dodgy in my experience) - obviously something is not quite right as you say signal strength is fine when you plug it back in your TV...

Jon, with the supplied aerial I get virtually no signal at all. I also tried the aerial from a portable TV, that yielded something (what i couldn`t tell you).
The portable TV also gets good reception

It seems the only way to know for sure is to try it. But be prepared , unpack carefully
ready for return.

I`m going to do a bit more research re reception in my area. I don`t want to put people off unnecessarily , as I say I like the product.

Parky,

I just wanted to check something else: were you already using digital before you got the EyeTV?

Its just that you mentioned that your portable TV gets good reception, but presuming that it is analogue this won't relate to how good the quality of the digital signal will be as digital needs a much higher quality signal to be processed properly compared to analogue.

Also, the quality and length of the aerial cable from the wall socket to the TV/Digital box can have a dramatic effect on digital signal quality (good quality cable, short as possible is best).

[It could be that the digital signal in your area isn't too good...]

Jon,
My main telly is on cable (blueyonder). However I still have the analogue rooftop aerial, which as i said works perfectly. The distance from wall to box is about 15ft , the physical condition of the cable/antenna is difficult to judge, without getting onto the roof ( exterior access only).Pehaps as the quote below says I need to upgrade my aerial

"Digital terrestrial television (DTT) involves digital signals being transmitted via a viewer’s existing rooftop aerial (some homes will need to upgrade their aerials).
About 75 per cent of homes in the UK are able to receive digital television in this way". quote from skyinteractive site.

You could be right.

Of course the irony in all this is that i hardly ever watch TV (Coronation St, Big Brother et al yawn...........)

Anyway, i think you should go for it, after all you can return it. (i bought mine from Apple online store)

Good Luck

Parky,

I just thought I'd check because I've got Freeview and when I first had it I had same problem as you - low quality signal (max. at about 45%).

I'd been using a long (very cheap) cable to connect the set-top box to the aerial socket that I'd had from my previous flat. I changed it to a good quality (expensive) cable - 'gold-plated' connectors etc. - and now get 100% signal quality.

Though as you say you still had problems with the portable aerial then it sounds like a reception issue...

I'll post back on my EyeTV DTT experiences if I decide to get one...

I just bought this myself. I live in Kent(between Canterbury and Dover.) I think the aerial on top of my house is old but it doesn't get used much as I have Sky.

However, I do get a signal on most of the Freeview channels if I connnect the roof aerial via a signal booster (from Argos) into the EyeTV. Some channels dont work so well and theres a bit of breakup but its infinitely better than using that flimsy black one they give you in the box.
