wireless HP C4385 printer and airport extreme

I have a MBP. I just bought a wireless HP photosmart printer C4385. It works great when connected to the USB port on the airport but I cannot get it to connect wirelessly. The support site at HP is useless, as it only gives detailed info for Windows.

When trying to set the printer up wirelessly, I get an error message stating that the printer is out of range... but that's with the printer right next to the airport extreme, so that can't be the issue.

This is frustrating b/c if I knew I was only going to be able to use this printer with it connected to the airport extreme, I probably would have bought a different printer.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

mbp, Mac OS X (10.5.2)

I have a different HP wireless printer but this is how mine is setup.

1. On the printer, go into setup and then network.
2. Make sure wireless is turned ON.
3. In the setup menu, choose "Print Report".

This report should tell you what networking address the printer has. Make sure it is on the same network that you are on. Once you know the address of the printer, you should be able to get ahold of it wirelessly. You may need to change your computer settings temporarily to make those changes.

It took a few hours, but I finally connected a HP wireless printer to our wireless network.

You'll need to know the hex password for your Airport network. That is, if you use the password "guest" for your Airport network, MacOS converts it behind the scenes into hexadecimal. The hexadecimal password is what the printer uses, too.

To find this:
- System Preferences -> Network -> Airport -> Configure
The Airport window displays.
Select the network, let's call it WIRELESS.
Select the EDIT button on your left.
A Security Dialogue Box displays, with
network: WIRELESS
Password: *************
Select the checkbox for "Show password"
The password, a string of letters and numbers starting with "$" displays.

Copy this password!!

Close the Network window.

NOW, go to your wireless printer, and follow HP's instructions for "set up" to enter the hexadecimal network password into the printer.

Once this is done, you can look in
System Preferences -> Print & Fax -> Printing
and the printer should display, probably with a goofy name like HP343343A.
Edit the printer name and location (Printer Setup) to something that makes sense.

This should work.

I just bought a iMac, AirPort Extreme, and HP photosmart printer C4385.

After running the HP install and setup CD, all of the HP functions worked wirelessly with the exception of printing. When attempting to print wirelessly, I would get the message that the "Printer is currently off-line."

I stumbled across a fix that worked for me.

1. Open "System Preferences -> Print & Fax"
2. Control Click the HP printer (possibly HP8B675A)
3. Select "Reset printing system..."
4. Select "OK"
5. Click the + to add a printer.
6. Under the default tab the mac searches for printers. Fairly quickly it detected,
PRINTER NAME "Photosmart C4380 series [8B675A]" - KIND "Bonjour"

However, I waited a few minutes and the following printer was detected:
PRINTER NAME "HP8B675A" - KIND "Network Printer (HP IP)"

7. Select this "Network Printer (HP IP)" and click ADD. (My iMac selected the appropriate driver.)

This solved the problem for me, and the HP now seems to be fully functional.

Hope this might help.

Hi all,
I have a Macbook Pro and a new HP c4385 wireless printer and I'd been having trouble hooking up my printer wirelessly as well. This is a simple fix, and you may have already tried it, but even though the computer was new, I still went to the HP website and downloaded the driver again and it worked. You can search the driver for your printer here:

hope this helps!

OK I must be nuts, can you help me here. I plugged my USB into my PC which is running XP. The I installed the HP software to my macbook. I got it to recognize the wireless printer, but I have to select it through my airport and when I do it shuts off my internet. Did I miss something? Or is this how the wireless deal works. Any suggestions would be great.
