iMovie wont recognise Panasonic camcorder

Hi,

I am trying to import video in to iMovie HD 6.0.3 using a Panasonic NV-DS6. Im on OSX 10.5.2.

The camcorder just uses standard DV tapes. However iMovie wont acknowledge that the camcorder is connected and I cant import.

I am attempting to connect using firewire as instructed. Have tried all the tips to overcome camcorder identification issues (resetting the date etc) but nothing is working.

Any ideas as to what the problem may be?

Hi JJ,

Welcome to Apple discussions.

If it's miniDV and you have a firewire cable, it should work.

Here's the steps:

If your cam's battery is charged sufficiently for an hour's worth of tape run - OK - otherwise hook cam to AC power.
With cam off , Mac on, connect the firewire between the two.
Set cam on PLAYBACK - not PC mode
Open iMovie and turn on the cam.
iMovie should recognize the cam and within moments offer you the import button.
From then on the Mac will control the cam.

If this doesn't work, you may have a bad firewire cable or one of the two ports could have a problem. See if that helps.

I attempted to find an NV-DS6 in a camcorder review site and it appears there is no such model number. Can you clarify what camcorder you have?

Hey Forest,

Thanks for the response. I have had another dig at it, but again.. no response.

The model of the camcorder is actually a NV-DS65.

Any more ideas would be much appreciated!

according to some databases, your device has a fw/dv/iLink-port and a usb-port.. be sure, you're using the fw-port with Mac (=don't confuse it with the _usb port_ ...)

connect device to power-line..
set camera to 'Play'..
click on the Blue Apple upper left in Finder, 'About this Mac'/More...'
the launching *System Profiler* now should show you your camera under 'Firewire'..

if not...
cable broken (=4-8$ new one)
fw-ports 'fried' on camera (=new camera ... )
fw-ports 'fried' on Mac (=new Mac ... )

before getting into panic-mode: try your camera/cable on some other Mac/PC (ask some shop mates...). if it DOES work on some other machine.. your Mac has some serious problem 😟
