Installer/Software Update problems

I am having problems with installing or updating some software. When I try to start the installer, it acts as though it is going to work: the icons in the dock move to make room for another icon but then move right back and close the gap. The installer never runs long enough to generate or change the display. This has happened with three different software packages: iMacEFIUpdate1.3; Kodak EasyShare v 6.0.2; and Parallels-Desktop-5582-Mac-en-ND.

I talked to Kodak about the problem. All they wanted to do at first was help me download the installer. After I convinced them I had a good download, they sent me a CD containing the software. Same result - no installation.

The problem with the iMacEFIUpdate1.3 happened today. It was part of a group of six updates and I was not at the computer while the updates were being downloaded and installed.

Other software updates and installations have worked with no problems.

I have repaired permissions, but did not start from the installation disk. Could this be the problem?

I am at a loss as to what to try next. Does anyone have a solution?

I finally got back to try to solve my problem. The following was copied from the console log as I tried one of the installs that fail:

dyld: Symbol not found: logdatasourcenotify

Expected in: /System/Library/Frameworks/InstallerPlugins.framework/Versions/A/InstallerPlugi ns

May 14 13:09:27 robert-ridenours-computer crashdump[328]: crash report written to: /Users/BigBob/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Installer.crash.log

By the way, I got the firmware update to work. The first time I was not at the computer and did not see the special instructions.

However, the Kodak EasyShare and Parallels Desktop updates still do not work.

Hi Robert

this might be as simple as the default application for opening install packages being somehow set to the copy of 'installer' retained after an 'archive & install'.

Pick one of your install packages in Finder & choose File-Get Info from the menu bar ( or press command-I ) . A window should open with info about the package, including an 'open with' section.....

click the drop-down arrows on the right of 'open with' and choose 'other' & in the dialogue that opens choose the 'Installer' application that should be in HD/Applications/Utilities not any previous system folder....

then click 'Change all' in the info window & that should ensure that all Install Packages now open with the correct Installer Application.

-------

If you wish to check first that this would cure the problem; you can ctrl-click on one of the problem install packages, then choose 'open with' & as above, pick HD/Applications/Utilities/Installer . If that works, you'll know that changing all via the get-info window will solve the problem.

The latest on my Installer problem:

All of the filed installations give the same messages as reported earlier.

Parallels Desktop and Kodak Printer Driver are set to open with Installer (3.0) (default). The Installer in HD/Applications/Utilities is Version (2.1.9). When I try to change to that version under Get Info, I get the following:

"You don't have the privileges to change the application for this document only. Do you want to change all your Installer documents to open with the application "Installer"?

This change will apply to all Installer documents with extension ".pkg".

Cancel Continue"

I pick Continue and nothing changes!

Kodak EasyShare has no "OPEN WITH" under Get Info.

I tried the ctrl-click on the Parallels Desktop Installer and told it to use Installer (2.1.9). It worked!

I tried the same thing with the Kodak PrinterDriver Installer and it appeared to work, but I cannot find the supposedly installed software. I think the Kodak EasyShare has to be installed before the Printer Driver.

When I tried the ctrl-click with the Kodak EasyShare Installer, there was no Open With available.

As some possible relevant information, my computer came loaded with OS 10.5 but some of the software I use does not play well with 10.5. So instead of updating a bunch of software, I loaded the new machine with OS 10.4.11 before any non-system software was installed. I used the "archive & install", so that is probably why things are looking for Installer 3.0.

Is there some way to get rid of the "previous system"? I cannot even find it! Is it an invisible folder?

Easyshare 6.0.2 when downloaded from Kodak is a standalone installer Application, not an installer package ....it can't be opened directly by "Installer" but should simply run on its own when double-clicked. I imagine that the Kodak supplied CD version is exactly the same.....

ctrl-click on the easyshare installer, choose 'get info' , in the 'Kind' section it will likely say "Application - Universal" If so, then that explains why 1: Installer won't open it, and 2: why there's no 'open with' dialogue for it.

-------

The previous system should be ( just as your Console message said...) in HD/Previous Systems.localized/Previous System 1/ It's not normally invisible.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120 explains how the Archive and Install works, I don't know offhand why some people get Previous Systems .localized rather than plain 'Previous Systems' but it doesn't seem uncommon.

--------
Apple say "Don't install older versions of Mac OS than what comes with your computer" so I wonder if that might cause you problems later? Certainly something seems off here ( the default application for anything shouldn't be pointing at something in the Previous System )

--------

Anyway, assuming you're gonna soldier on for now with Tiger on a Leopard-shipped Mac.... I guess that leaves the Easyshare installer not working? If you've double-clicked the Easyshare installer, it bounced in the Dock, and nothing more happened; there might be something in the Console log explaining why.... or a crash log for it in /Users/BigBob/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/

try the Easyshare installer app again - & look at the console log for clues while you do it.

Sorry to say Robert, that it won't work. Going to Tiger from Leopard is a problem.
(already referred to by Andy) You can not install a lower version than the one that
shipped. Some things will work, others will not, hence, your problem. I believe the
reference to a 'previous system' was that of Leopard and not Tiger.

The problem is a driver issue, ie; The Installer will still see Leopard, and the drivers
are not the same for both OSX 10.4 and 10.5, probably even different providers.

So, in short, it can't be done.
