Hyperterminal to Cisco Equip on a Macbook (black)

Howdy,

I've recently purchased some cisco equipment (switch and router). I'd like to configure it via the CLI with hyperterminal.

The problem is, when I create a new connection, I do not have the option to select COM1 from the little drop down menu (setting the baud rate, etc.). The only option is TCP/IP winsock. My guess is that there is no serial connection because it's not an actual PC. I suppose if that's the case, I'm just out of luck.

Anyone have success using a Macbook to connect to the console port?
Anyone know of a work-around if indeed the COM port is not there?

Thanks for any input.

, Josh

Hi,

If the equipment in question requires a serial connection, you would need a USB-to-serial adapter. These units, typically, have DB-9M plugs.

If the adapter cannot be used with the MacBook under Windows, you may want to try Mac OS X instead. Check that there are Mac drivers for the adapter (included or downloadable). The ZTerm terminal emulation program could possibly be of interest.

I manage Cisco devices for my job, and I dont use bootcamp, I use OS X. After you get your USB to Serial Adapter (google for it, I got mine from newegg for about $10 US). Anyway, I use minicom, which can be installed via macports. Once you get that set up, it is extremely easy to manage cisco devices from within OS X. I configured minicom, then saved the config as "cisco", so all that I need to do to connect to the console of a cisco device, is open a terminal and type "sudo minicom cisco". You have to use sudo, or run minicom as root so that it can create the lock files it needs. You will also need to add to your path statement in your shell, or else you will have to type in the full path (/opt/local/bin/minicom in my case) when you want to use it. I have this working on all 3 of my machines (Macbook w/ 10.4, Macbook Pro w/ 10.5, and PowerMac G5 w/ 10.4). Good luck.
