Port forwarding for WOW

Sorry, I don't have a TC, but the port mapping (forwarding) steps should be the same as for the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn).

AEBSn - Port Mapping Setup
To setup port mapping on an 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), either connect to the AEBSn's wireless network or temporarily connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to one of the LAN port of the AEBSn, and then use the AirPort Utility, in Manual Setup, to make these settings:

1. Reserve a DHCP-provided IP address for the host device.
Internet > DHCP tab
o On the DHCP tab, click the "+" (Add) button to enter DHCP Reservations.
o Description: <enter the desired description of the host device>
o Reserve address by: MAC Address
o Click Continue.
o MAC Address: <enter the MAC (what Apple calls Ethernet ID if you are using wired or AirPort ID if wireless) hardware address of the host computer>
o IPv4 Address: <enter the desired IP address>
o Click Done.

2. Setup Port Mapping on the AEBSn.
Advanced > Port Mapping tab
o Click the "+" (Add) button
o Service: <choose the appropriate service from the Service pop-up menu>
o Public UDP Port(s): <enter the appropriate UDP port values>
o Public TCP Port(s): <enter the appropriate TCP port values>
o Private IP Address: <enter the IP address of the host server>
o Private UDP Port(s): <enter the same as Public UDP Ports or your choice>
o Private TCP Port(s): <enter the same as Public TCP Ports or your choice>
o Click "Continue"

I just got a TC and spent many frustrating hours trying to configure port forwarding - researching, learning the more arcane terminologies, Googling the bejeezus out of related topics, browsing the Apple forums, RTFMing, etc. I was able to pick up bits and pieces but felt like a group of blind men trying to describe an elephant: bits of it I grokked, but holes remained.

Then I stumbled across your concise, well-written and informative reply. I'm in awe. It was exactly what I needed. It should be included in Apple's official documentation for AEBS & TC. It's that good. No, it's better (high praise indeed, since Apple's tech writers are the best).

Okay, I'm actually going thru your walk-thru, and I'm drawing blanks on some of the variables you list. If it's not too much, can you clarify some of them for me?

My DSL modem's connected to my TC, that's connected via ethernet to my iMac, which is my preferred connection (I could use Wi-Fi - it works fine - but prefer a wired connection). The port I want to forward is, say, #49170.

In step 1E (MAC address), where would I find my Ethernet ID? Is that my iMac's IP Address (10.0.1.200)? Or should I use my iMac's AirPort ID, even if I prefer an Ethernet connection?

In step 1F, where would I find the IPv4 address? Since I'm using DHCP, my iMac's network prefs has that blank.

In step 2B, none of the choices are a good fit (Azureus), so I left Service blank (Choose A Service). OK?

In step 2C, D, F & G, I'd enter the port I want forwarded, 49170. OK?

In step 2E, I'm unclear on where I'd find my private IP address. I know my public IP address is my AEBS' IP address, so I'd guess this field wants my iMac's IP address, but thought I'd check with you before tossing this particular coin to see if it's heads or tails. 🙂

"Here are the basic steps for port mapping on the 802.11g AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS)

Assign a manual IP to the host device
System Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort > TCP/IP
o Configure IPv4: Manually
o IP Address: <choose an IP address outside of the AEBS's DHCP range: 10.0.1.2 - 10.0.1.200>
o Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
o Router: 10.0.1.1
o DNS Servers <your ISP DNS server IPs>

Setup Port Mapping on the AEBS
To setup port mapping on an AEBS, either connect to the AEBS's wireless network or, temporarily, connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the LAN port of the AEBS, and then use the AirPort Admin Utility to change these settings:

Port Mapping tab
o Click "Add"
o Public Port: <enter the Port # which will be accessed from the Internet>
o Private Address: <enter the static IP address from above>
o Private Port: <either enter the same value as the Public port or the value you want your application/service to answer on>
o Click "Ok"
o Repeat the last series of steps for each port you wish to map."
