Safari Won't Open

My safari won't open, it bounces once then stops, I don't get an error message or anything. I am connected to the internet because my mail, and iTunes store works. I have tried installing the software update and it gets to maybe 5% and then freezes. I have tried everything I can think of and haven't made any progress.

No, it was all on one of my G5 PPC desktops. There were no problems on either the other desktop nor the G4 Powerbook. And, initially, it was Safari 2.whatever and I first tried solving the problem with an upgrade to Safari 3.1.1. That didn't help - same symptoms, one bounce in the dock and eventually computer freeze.

Now, since dumping all those icons at UserName/Library/Safari and everything in UserName/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/Bookmarks, Safari 3.1.1 is running faster than I can remember and there are no bounces!
