Apple please fix XML import!!! Thank you!

I just bought Logic 7 based upon Apple's claims that it supports XML import from a Final Cut Pro timeline. Whoops- I'm an idiot- should have read these posts first.

Apparently I am not the only one to have no success getting a clean transfer.

Sure I am able to import the XML, but it's a huge mess. Tracks are not showing up correctly and audio keyframe (automation) is always way screwed up. And from all the other posts on this subject I have seen there is no joy for anyone else either.

The sole reason for me to buy this app was to do precision post audio work for video done in Final Cut. One would think that the smartest way to go would be to stick with all Apple apps- c'mon Apple. PLEASE give us a FIX! Or at tell us we are all crazy and explain what we need to do, or not do, to at least work around these problems.

Fully fully agree with you jw. Paid quite a lot of money already for stuff that's supposed to work TOGETHER. Why advertise with XML/OMF import when it's clearly not working? Apple, your pro-customers are waiting...and waiting.

I agree! You would not believe what i had to go through to get audio from FCP to Logic 7!!! OMF didn't work, XML didn't work! Unreal.

Here's what i eventually did. I exported an OMF from FCP and then opened Logic 6.4, imported the OMF (which crashed but automatically saved the project file) and then opened logic 7 and opened the 6.4 logic project. Unbelievable!

Man, i hope they fix this stuff ASAP, luckily there was no money on the line. Man, i would have been mad!

the trouble with the OMF only happens when you try to import more then 107 regions per track
I think the same limitation is happening with the XML

I had a 3 min short that i was trying to import for noise and reverb work and i could not successfully import it into logic... Crashed every-time. Nothing complicated, no 7.1 mix, certainly no more than 107 regions... Just simple dialogue and music.

Hi Guys,

I (last night) successfully exported an XML file from FCP HD and then imported it into Logic Pro 7 without a glitch. Granted the XML file contained less than 100 regions.

Dave,
My import consists of about 50 regions, on 8 tracks- all have had some minor audio edited with keyframes in Final Cut.

When I import as an XML, some of the tracks shift out of place verically and none of the automation audio levels are in the correct positions.

Like the others, I'm not doing anything fancy- in fact even though I'm using 8 tracks I never have more than 4 running at a time. Just dialog and music. No audio effects or audio dissolves in FCP.

What steps did you take to get a successful import? Do your audio levels remain intact from Final Cut? Could you give a little more detail?

Well I hate to beat a dead horse- I just don't want this to get pushed back into oblivion. Sooo.....just thought I'd add this:

What Apple says about Logic:
"Migrating audio content from other applications such as Soundtrack and Final Cut Pro becomes much simpler with Logic Pro 7 support of XML audio files. This open and simple protocol guarantees robust and reliable transfer of data from one application to another."

And what Apple says about Final Cut HD:
"Final Cut Pro HD supports XML interchange format, which describes every aspect of a program from edits and transitions to effects, color correction settings and keyframe data. Using XML interchange format, you can seamlessly share project, bin, sequence, clip and media data generated by Final Cut Pro HD with any other application or system that supports XML"

Actually I am not sure if this is a Final Cut problem or a Logic problem but either way they are BOTH Apple products and I would assume that if any two products would work great together it would be these two (at least here's to hoping) 😉

Exactly. We'll just keep adding replies to this topic until they listen and
do something about XML/OMF. It makes me think Apple is probably more into iPod socks than making their Pro-stuff work.

just keeping this thread alive.

I certainly feel less stupid now I know others have made the same mistake as me (buying logic 7 cause I thought I could do the Avid / Pro Tools thing with FCP / Logic).

Interesting claim that "This open and simple protocol GUARANTEES robust and reliable transfer of data from one application to another"

I guess I'll just have to use the 'export tracks as aiffs' system for dubs until they fix this.

Calling all Final Cut & Logic users....

If you get a moment- could you give XML export/import a whirl and see what you get? If it works for you please let us know and what you did to get it to work. If it doesn't, please add your comments to the list so we can get this problem to the top of Apple's bug fix heap!

I may not be correct, but if the audio regions are not aligned correctly, can it be that SMPTE time code is set incorrectly? Over here, it is set to 25fps by default; maybe it should be 29.97fps in North America... I don't have Final Cut to test so I may be wronged.
